Bad News for Man’s Best Friend: Dogs Are Environmental Villains

Dogs have “extensive and multifarious” environmental impacts, disturbing wildlife, polluting waterways and contributing to carbon emissions, new research has found.

In the US, studies have found that deer, foxes and bobcats were less active in or avoid wilderness areas where dogs were allowed, while other research shows that insecticides from flea and tick medications kill aquatic invertebrates when they wash off into waterways. Dog feces can also leave scent traces and affect soil chemistry and plant growth.

The carbon footprint of pets is also significant. A 2020 study found the dry pet food industry had an environmental footprint of around twice the land area of the UK, with greenhouse gas emissions—56 to 151 Mt CO2— equivalent to the 60th highest-emitting country.
researchers attributed the extent of the environmental impacts to the sheer number of dogs globally, as well as “the lax or uninformed behavior of dog owners”.

Outdoor cats pose a significant threat to local ecosystems due to their predation on native wildlife and their role in spreading diseases. They are known to kill billions of birds and mammals annually in the United States. Additionally, cat feces can carry parasites that can harm marine life and other animals, and they can also contribute to overpopulation and disease transmission.

OUTLAW cats and dogs. Problem solved.

I was talking to a researcher doing water quality studies in Galveston Bay, and asked which parts of the
Bay were not safe to eat fish from. His answer was that most areas were safe, but to not eat anything raw,
i.e. not Raw Oysters or Sushi, because the fecal counts were high in any urban area, because of pets, and their untreated waste.
Rural areas were not much better because the same is true of farm animals.

They have to complain about something since they are forbidden to complain about windmills killing raptors.

I buy cooked fake crab California rolls. Then I send my wife a text that says, "GAS STATION SUSHI!"

I like them. Raw shit, though, no.
