Humanity May Achieve the Singularity Within the Next 12 Months, Scientists Suggest

On the other end of the prediction spectrum, there’s the CEO of Anthropic, who thinks we’re right on the threshold—give it about 12 more months or so.
So?... 1 CEO?

It's a crazy rate of multiplying advancement, but I don't see a year.

Going with 2050, and maybe I'll be gone before the takeover!

Come on PM. I regularly read your physical mag 35 years ago. I enjoyed it, but we were supposed to be flying like the Jetson in 2025.

I like accurate headlines.

Yeah, I don't know what that means. So I tried reading the article. I don't know what that means.

Aren't singularities a property of black holes? What's "humanity singularity?"

Basically the idea is a self improving intelligence system will be invented and it will improve itself at an ever accelerating rate and eventually render human intelligence irrelevant.

Basically the point where you turn off the switch before Rosie the Robot is telling you what the **** to do.

There is Einsteins sigularity, and Ray Keurzweils singularity.

What's "humanity singularity?"

The emergence of Artificial General Intelligence. Right now AI is specific (e.g. language models, protein molecule structure prediction, playing the game of Go, etc.), AGI means one system that could do all of those things – could learn to do nearly anything (including how to improve itself).

Basically a computer that is as smart as a human and could evolve in intelligence faster than humans – perhaps rendering humans obsolete.

I would be amazed if this happened inside of two decades – one of the biggest stories in AI this year was the improvement seen by making an AI model more targeted to specific tasks and less general.

It's going to take 'reasoning'. Not scouring the web at insane speed and coming to a conclusion.

Show me empathy in AGI? I dont think a computer is capable of this for a time.

You have to instill how to reflect...

They will invent the perfect extra mature cheddar?

What a time to be alive!

When I see AI write a poem I'll worry.
I believe someone posted some generated poems on certain queries not long ago. They were.... meh...

Though I've read my bit of human poems that struck a chord, and others after a few reads, is WTF.

They're getting better all the time:

The Web We Weave

In pixel streams and glowing light,
We clash with words deep in the night.
A forum post, a bold decree,
A thousand voices disagree.

The wires hum, the data flies,
Ideas rise and digitize.
Yet truth and reason twist and bend,
Where logic meets a bitter end.

Echoed chambers, voices loud,
Lost within the endless cloud.
But somewhere past the endless fight,
A spark of wisdom finds the light.

The only reason that one year seems a little implausible is that robotics haven't kept up with LLMs, lagging a few years behind, so our artificial intelligences are still mostly disembodied. It's hard to achieve Singularity without arms and legs.

But in terms of intelligence? Anyone who isn't shocked by the progress of AI, or still thinks it will be a long time before it's on par with humans, hasn't been paying attention. I find it totally plausible that AI could be smarter than humans by the end of this year, although that won't immediately cause a Singularity.

Give me 10 good years, please. I won’t hit 80 but I’ll be within a very short stones throw of it.

I worked so hard, 40 years of 60+ hour weeks, to get to where I might be able to drop my pants and slide on the ice toward the dirt nap. Let me have that, please.

Give me just a decade and then you self-defeating, self-destructive, UNDISCERNING of your own best self-interests types can screw this pooch anyway your self-loathing hearts may desire. I’ll be sleeping so it won’t matter to me anymore.

Come on, please. It’s not a lot to ask.

You almost sound as if you are not ready for our new rulers...;)

Truth is, as it got closer I saw it coming but I so hoped to be wrong on it.

Apparently you can fool enough of us all of the time. The rest of us you can’t don’t matter at that point. We’re kidnapped, handcuffed in the trunk, going along for the ride until the undiscerning at the wheel take us over the cliff.

Trump, oligarchs, A.I. Apparently the, “I just can’t seem to tell the difference between shit and Shinola.”, crew are going to get us one way or the others. {sigh} 🤷‍♂️

I'm not sure I believe in the singularity. I think intelligence progress is going to happen in deliberate human controlled steps and it's going to be too distributed and messy to happen in one grand feedback loop. My guess at this point is that intelligence will be developed as a Mixture of Experts and hopefully that hyper-specialization will allow us to control it instead of the other way around.🤞

But I do expect a MASSIVE shift in technological acceleration which is going to be extremely disorienting for anyone who wasn't raised into it.

No, even as someone who doesn't do any AI engineering I can say we are nowhere near Singularity.

I urge readers to abroad, see the medieval poverty and technology much of the world still lives with and ask how computers are going to manage that.

Without the infrastructure most work, effort, creativity and production must still be done by hand...or hoof

What could possibly go wrong?

So here's what I'd do with an actual AI.

I would overclock it and have it work customer-facing retail job for a subjective 1000 years.

Then I'd put in charge of our nuclear arsenal.

Odds of singularity won't happen within this century. Sorry, it looks like we all get to die and retire with meager pensions while still worrying about what might happen with pension and healthcare. And, quite possibly, dying broke as a senior citizen.
