No one should want to talk about politics at Thanksgiving but in these perilous times it will happen.

Almost unavoidable. Did anybody see how all the 24/7's started Thanksgiving Day. Literally the entire miserable mess of them offered the old sewage about Trump becoming House Speaker in 2022. That is such an old story but rehashed for the express purpose of giving people something to argue about at the dinner table. Why bring that trash up on Thanksgiving Day. We are so screwed up.

I don't even celebrate it any longer. It WAS a celebration of community and community does not exist in this country any longer. Heck, in many circles we don't even want community any longer.

”How to deal with Trump hating relatives …”

… break out the good Scotch?
In more civil times perhaps, but it's hard to predict who the angry drunk will be. I think bong hits might be in order; angry stoners are a real rarity.
😉

Anyone classless enough to bring up politics at a holiday gathering is best ignored.

Yeah, I've tried that- but sometimes they just won't let it go. It's really hard to just sit there, nod, and smile politely while they keep spouting all sorts of absolutely insane nonsense.

Trumpism is a pandemic, much like Covid. It seems to infect brain cells and cause lasting damage. The country has been dealing with two devastating pandemics at the same time.

Yep. Probably true.

"In fact, followers of cults and authoritarian dogma who begin to doubt the truth of their convictions may initially dig their heels in. The more an individual has invested in the alternate reality, the more they are reluctant to admit to others, and to themselves, that they have misjudged the situation. Many prefer to live in denial rather than experience the shame or humiliation that they were wrong. For some, this urge to save face can be a powerful force even in life and death situations, as sociologist Brooke Harrington writes of pandemic and vaccine deniers who have fallen sick with Covid-19 and continue to uphold their views while in the ICU.

This is why, as we get together this holiday season, we might heed the advice of experts like Steven Hassan, who encourages people not to cast judgment or reprimand their loved ones who are immersed in disinformation. We might also resist the temptation to present individuals with evidence of the falsity of their beliefs; I know from my own experience that such evidence often comes from sources that these loved ones consider to be "fake news," and will be immediately dismissed - even if, in my case, that news is written by a family member.

What we can do is keep them close and find common ground on other issues, as hard as that might be. This does not mean we accept or validate their racist or anti-science beliefs, but rather aim to be strategic. After all, if we cut them off or yell at them, we simply magnify the chances that they will remain siloed among like-minded people."

I did not listen to the link.

My advice is that nobody should ever discuss the taboo subjects at any holiday celebration.

If the discussion wanders into the areas of religion or politics, asking when the football game starts seems to be a good thing.

I can't get rid of the feeling that he was talking about Democrats, Liberals, and socialists.

I try to use logic but as we see here on DP, liberals have a brain deficiency that doesn't permit them to understand it.
Any informed person can easily beat a liberal in a Thanksgiving day debate with a relative. I'm never the one to start it but I always end it with a glorious holiday debate victory if the relative wants to push the argument.

No matter which side of the aisle the negative comments come from, just agree; after a while they give up - no fun, except for you!

Let them eat cake (or pumpkin pie, or whatever else you got for dessert).

Most of us Conservative Republicans don't have time for such silliness today. We will concentrate on gorging ourselves like the swine we are.

Trump is the king of dumpster fires and a flaming moron but my family would never let him come between any of us. Happy thanksgiving all, even those ardent Trump cultists.

This is a list of our favorite moron Trump accomplished without any help from the moronic left. Just imagine what he could have done and would still be doing if the left hadn't saddled us with this old fool biden.

Did he get us out of Afghanistan as promised? Did he get us a bill to fix infrastructure as promised? Did he get us healthcare reform as promised? Did he build his wall and get Mexico to pay for it as promised?

Don't forget to add impeached twice and lying to the American people, I know by your past posts you're OK with it most are not. Gives you very little credibility here.

Happy Thanksgiving anyways.

"Pass interference my ass!"

Many years ago, we had a large gathering for the dinner. We all remarked after, that we had noticed a robust conversation that ceased when the carving started. The only thing heard was the clink of cutlery on plates for at least ten minutes before anyone came up for air….

He was on the way to getting us out but was thwarted by the misguided who voted for Biden and he screwed it up terribly.
His failures in infrastructure and healthcare reform were the result of the liberal opposition, not enough pork for their taste. Biden would also be impeached except for the fact that it would get us Kamala which, hard to believe would be even worse than Biden.

So Trump, the greatest negotiator in the world, could not get a bipartisan bill through but Biden did. Got it.

Again, Americans are no longer being killed in Afghanistan, thank you Mr. President.

Why are the gay guys sitting apart? Political argument?

Simply do not invite anyone who openly "dislikes" The Donald.
