I was listening to the Diane Rhem show today and the question came up about how this operation to get Bin Laden stayed secret for months, despite the fact that we seem to be in an age of wikileaks and way-too-fast media. One of her guests had this to say:
It was a point that got me thinking. Maybe leaked information is sort of an indication of whether we're doing the right thing. When our flaws are exposed, should we really get mad at or go after people?
I think what this says about leaks is when everyone is agreed on the mission, on the goal, which in this case was to take Bin Laden out of commission then nobody has an incentive to leak. You have incentives to leak when there are disagreements about the policy and about the objectives. Here there were no disagreements.
