Well? How many?
How many car accidents per year is too many?
Not the same, cars are mostly a necessity. Guns are a luxury.

Fair play, but ask yourself this question then. How many car accidents per year is too many?
Fair play, but ask yourself this question then.
But let's not be coy here, what's the sole purpose of any gun?
Do cars play such a roll? Alcohol? Tobacco?

...... what's the sole purpose of any gun?
To protect ones life and property.... To provide for sustinence. To prevent tyranny in government.
If guns were not available, murders and suicides would be accomplished by other means - just as they already are in jails and prisons where guns are not available. For this reason, I do not believe eliminating guns will eliminate these crimes or suicides. We need to look at why these acts are being committed in these numbers to unravel that problem - not at the tool used.
There may in some cases be some truth to this. I'm a suicide prevention counselor on the regional suicide line here and its interesting to consider the method. Women attempt suicide much more, but men succeed with much more regularity and this is often attributed to the method-- women attempt with pills or cutting, men use firearms. Firearms work.So I contend that if their was no gun for those who shoot themselves, they'd still be here long enough to get help.
How does it protect? Maybe to kill?Protection
How? Killing the prey perhaps?RightinNYC said:Food

This is the obtuse I was speaking of. Sure some people get a thrill out of target practice but again, a gun was built with one purpose in mind - lethality. If not we'd still have ancient muskets around.RightinNYC said:Transportation

Again, the exact obtuseness I was speaking of. A gun was built with being as lethal as possible for the category in which it was intended to fill."Shooting," which breaks down to protection, food gathering, and sportmanship. Of course, the criminal sees it as a tool to commit crime more easily. There is a negative to almost everything.
"Guns kill people".
Well, of course they do -- it they didn't they'd be worthless.
Killing people can be a legitimate, legal use of a firearm.
Thus, that guns are used to kill people isn't in any way an argument against them
Premeditated murders and suicides yes. But what about the woman who kills her husband and his prostitute before she realizes that she's the one in trouble now? Should it just be legal to kill in a moment of passion?
And in suicides, most people have a specific plan. They take pills or hang themselves or jump off buildings. I have a freind that was in the german military for several years. One of his soldiers killed himself by hanging. He could have shot himself or, like my friend says, "we had explosives he could have gone out a little more interestingly". So I contend that if their was no gun for those who shoot themselves, they'd still be here long enough to get help.
