How journalists and activists get prison time for drug charges
‘Meduza’ summarizes eight of Russia's most impactful Article 228 cases.
Headline on Russian newspapers Vedomosti, RBC, and Kommersant — “I/We Are Ivan Golunov”
On June 3, the Putin regime arrested Russian investigative journalist Ivan Golunov who works for the Estonian media company Meduza. He was charged with selling narcotics. There were signs after his arrest (including a two day stay in the hospital) that Golunov had been beaten by Russian police. Ivan Golunov had published expose's about corrupt oligarch businessmen and the Putin regime. Article 228 of the Russian Criminal Codex (illegal acquisition, possession, transportation, production, or processing of narcotic drugs) became a powerful tool in the government’s fight against opposition and human rights activists well before Meduza correspondent Ivan Golunov was arrested under the statute on June 6. In the past few years, there have been no fewer than eight cases in which that same article was applied to journalists, human rights defenders, and Russian citizens who simply took an active role in civil society.
In the above article, Meduza looks at five of those infamous Article 228 cases.
