How many votes are needed to vacate?

This is turning out to be a close vote i the beginning.

Notable, Boebert is a no…..

I think they need 5 GOP *if* the democrats vote to vacate (plus Gaetz)

we are 76 votes in and nobody has voted present yet. I suspect the dems are mostly voting against McCarthy.

About an hour ago, a motion to block the removal motion was defeated with 218 votes. That amount of support would also be enough to remove McCarthy as speaker, assuming no lawmakers change their minds.

211 opposed is the number that will sink him...

Who is measuring the drapes in the Speaker’s office?

Neck and neck in the mid sixties……

Gaetz is 100% right and I think he may actually get McCarthy kicked to the curb

214 is being reported as the magic number.

That was the number after the vote to block it. The count was 214 opposed and 206 in favor. Broken down by party, 206 republicans were in favor, and 10 opposed. All 205 Democrats were opposed.

I am torn, i see the arguments on both sides……guess I’m a “both-sider?”

I have read that if all Dems vote to vacate it will only take 4 GQP members voting to vacate for it to pass. Pelosi is not in attendance, others may be absent as well.

I'm watching a live feed of the vote but it doesn't display a running tally...

I am watching this via CSPAN, they have the running count up but not by party.

Just listening to this it sounds like Republicans are largely a no to remove McCarthy. The Yes votes are 4-5 Republicans and all Democrats.

BTW, Jordan just voted no to remove.

Looks like he may be out. None of the Dems are voting to support him. Looks like 5 may have their way.

2023, one would think that they would use an electronic voting system where this theater could be avoided.

Didn't he cut a deal to become Speaker in that only 5 (or so) could fire him? Or am I thinking of something else?

At this point he needs just a few Democrats to save him, this may be very damn close.

It's always so painful to watch isn't it. It also makes me assume that everything they do is likely this backwards and slow and inefficient..tip of the iceberg.

I think they should be seated in closer proximity, like in the UK Parliament. ….and issued lacrosse sticks…….
