"Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) said Friday that the Supreme Court “should step in” on former President Trump’s appeal following the presumptive GOP presidential nominee’s conviction on 34 felony counts in his New York hush money case.

“I do believe the Supreme Court should step in,” Johnson said during his appearance on Fox News’s “Fox and Friends.”

He later added that the justices on the nation’s highest court, “many” of whom he knows personally, are “deeply concerned about that, as we are. So, I think they will set this straight, but it’s gonna take a while.”


Trump was found guilty on all 34 felony charges Thursday in Manhattan by a 12-person jury."

Congress and the Supreme court would make a SUPER defense team for Trump. You'd have to like his chances!

And btw, Jaime Raskin says Johnson knows the Constitution better than any other Republican in Congress. I assume that's intended as a compliment.
 
Under what statute can SCOTUS "step in" on a state case? How is it going to "set this straight?"

Johnson's spewing nonsense to pacify the rubes.
 
This could be a question on a high school government class exam,

Cannon and the supreme Court make Smith wait a month to find out immunity is a myth, but ussc can drop everything to "step in " and save trump.

It was a state court. There's already an appeals process.

Johnson is lobbying the court to grab the case and strike down the law.
 
SCOTUS will have an opportunity to address any federal constitutional claim after Trump's direct appeal is complete in the state court system - the same as in every other criminal case.

True. But by then it won't matter. He'll either win and have his justice department drop all federal charges and be immune from state court prosecution for his term in office; or he'll lose the election and drag appeals out forever. The worst he'll get is house arrest at Mar-a-Lago anyway.
 
Can't Trump be taken to prison or house arrest immediately after sentencing is pronounced on July 11?
