WASHINGTON (AP) — Before House Speaker Mike Johnson was elected to public office, he was the dean of a small Baptist law school that didn’t exist.

The establishment of the Judge Paul Pressler School of Law was supposed to be a capstone achievement for Louisiana College, which administrators boasted would “unashamedly embrace” a “biblical worldview.” Instead,in it collapsed roughly a decade ago without enrollg students or opening its doors amid infighting by officials, accusations of financial impropriety and difficulty obtaining accreditation, which frightened away would-be donors.

There is no indication that Johnson engaged in wrongdoing while employed by the private college, now known as Louisiana Christian University. But as a virtually unknown player in Washington, the episode offers insight into how Johnson navigated leadership challenges that echo the chaos, feuding and hard-right politics that have come to define the Republican House majority he now leads.

The chapter is just the latest to surface since the four-term congressman’s improbable election as speaker last week following the ouster of former Speaker Kevin McCarthy, a reminder of his longstanding ties to the Christian right, which is now a dominant force in GOP politics.

It’s also a milestone that he does not typically mention when discussing a pre-Congress resume that includes work as litigator for conservative Christian groups that fiercely opposed gay rights and abortion, as well as his brief tenure as a Louisiana lawmaker who pushed legislation that sanctioned discrimination for religious reasons.

Johnson’s office did not offer comment for this story and declined to make him available for an interview.

Charming. The repugs even push 'discrimination for religious reasons.'

He’s an LSU guy so that’s 👍

I'm more scared of this guy than I ever was of dipshit's Jordan or McCarthy. This guy is bad news. I have really bad vibes...

Anytime you have a religious radical in power you face danger.

So do I. My wife says he's evil. I agree.

Tell us what is wrong with "having longstanding ties to the Christian right".
Does being a member of the Christian Right condemn Johnson to being a bad person? Has he done anything illegal so far which would prevent him from being a good Speaker of the House?

I guess this is just another pre-emptive strike against Johnson which the Leftist knee biters hope with hobble him going forward.

Over the years, the Christian right has advocated for political power in order to impose their beliefs onto others. Which not only goes against the Constitution, but the Bible itself. They want a theocracy...which most Americans do not want and the Constitution forbids and that God is not that fond of.

The Christian right has often cherry-picked or twisted the word of God to their own, political ends and justifications for the oppression of....and sometimes violence against...those they feel are not with God.

Most, regular, devout Christians don't buy into the zealotry of this guy. Nothing he proposes actually helps the nation or the people....it is about denying basic human and American rights of some American citizens. A religious zealot is a danger to the religion for the simple reason that the zealot feels he is superior in his faith than the rest of you.

The sad thing is that folks are getting behind this guy not because they have the same level of zealotry as he does....or even attend church on a regular basis...it's just another way to score political points by shoving it into liberals' faces. And what a lot of you folks don't get is this:

He will turn on you...and make you a second class citizen if you don't adhere to his agenda. If you are really behind this guy: stop drinking, stop smoking, tithe as much as you can to the churches he approves of, go to church and be seen every single Sunday and holiday and you had better follow his interpretation of Christianity...or else you will become the enemy.

Still want to back this guy?

You sound like those voters in 1963 who were afraid of JFK because he was (OH NO!) a Catholic and possibly beholden to the Pope in Italy.
I am much more worried about the infestation of DEI, ESG, CRT, and LGBTQ bullshit being promoted in our schools, corporations, and government institutions.

I am going to back Mike Johnson until he does something wrong in violation of the Constitution or in opposition to common sense and what is good for the country.

How much time do you have? :D

The article does list some of the problems -- e.g. bigotry towards LGBT individuals, and hypocrisy about using lawsuits to challenge elections. But the primary point of the article is that he presided over a new law school that flamed out before getting off the ground. It doesn't blame him for any specific failures or allege any sort of wrongdoing, but is pointing it out because Americans don't really know much about the man now 3rd in line for the Presidency, and he usually sweeps this one under the rug.

He's second in line for the presidency. But that would be quibbling. What's scary is knowing who is first in line to be president. You're afraid of how much influence Johnson could have on the entire Congress. I'm afraid of the incompetence of a VP who could suddenly become president. That, to me, is a real threat, as opposed to a threat from someone who is a successful businessman and who is leading an exemplary life albeit not in the way you would like him to lead his life.

Now Johnson is in a position to lead many more lives than just his…….

And I want him to do that from a position of integrity and honesty.
If he breaks the law, then the knee-biters should go after him.
