House passes bill to cap insulin prices

The House of Representatives voted Thursday to approve legislation that would limit cost-sharing for insulin under private health insurance and Medicare. The vote was 232-193, with 12 Republican members joining their Democratic colleagues to pass the measure.

The Affordable Insulin Now Act would cap insulin prices at either $35 a month or 25% of an insurance plan's negotiated price — whichever is lower. The legislation aims to take effect in 2023 but its fate in the Senate remains unclear.
"This is a kitchen table issue, "House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said to reporters ahead of the bill's passage on Thursday.

"One in four Americans is forced to skip or ration doses of insulin and that's life-threatening," she said, noting the legislation "paves the way" for further action on negotiating lower drug prices beyond insulin.

That would be great. But how many Manchin and Sinema owners in the pharmaceutical industry?
 
Didn't the factcheckers tell me that the GOP isn't against the popular items in Build Back Better (heavens no!), just the bill as a whole? And if only the Dems would bring up widely popular items piecemeal they'd surely sail through with bipartisan support?
 
Great. Maybe people will stop taking Biden's advice and getting insulin in Canada. It's not like we have a surplus supply sitting around waiting for an increase in demand.

That looks like a massive opportunity for arbitrage. Some of the heroes in Congress who want to micromanage private industry out to jump in, or just build their own insulin production facilities. They could make a fortune undercutting the existing suppliers.

After having watched Republicans refuse a vaccine during a pandemic to own the libs and take horse dewormer instead, seems entirely possible diabetic GOPers care more about critical race theory than cheaper meds.
 

This is a great bill.

It's a shame that the Republicans want diabetics to pay too much for insulin.
 
Under Trump: for the first time in 54 years US medication prices including insulin were in sharp decline. This abruptly ended when Creepy Joe reversed or let expire all of his executive orders and policies causing a 550% increase for insulin. What Creepy Joe's Handlers are doing here is what caused American Health Care and Drug prices to skyrocket in the first place and will cause scarcity more than reducing costs.

Trump threatened to veto the $35 cap when the Dems passed it under his administration.

One in four Americans are skipping doses? That's 82 million people. How many are taking it and not skipping doses? Joe gives this idiot a lot of cover because he says so many dumb things, but the garbage that she blurts out, when she is able to make a sentence, is just incredibly stupid.

It's a good bill that should become a law. It won't though.
 
While this does some good for insured end consumers of insulin by sharply reducing out of pocket costs for at least some of them, unfortunately it:

A: Does nothing to actually address and control the absurdly bloated and disproportionately high prices charged by insulin producers, merely shifting more of the burden of payment onto insurers (which is almost certain to result in increased premiums and copays elsewhere to compensate).

and

B: By extension does exactly nothing to help the uninsured and underinsured.

It's estimated by KFF that the legislation will help only about 1 in 4 people who take insulin ( https://www.healthsystemtracker.org...-insulin-among-people-with-private-insurance/ || https://prospect.org/health/insulin-bill-wont-help-many-insulin-patients/ ) . Deeply flawed, but better than nothing. This should not be seen as a silver bullet or even a big step so much as a small start in the right direction (yet there are many media outlets incorrectly lauding it as such or failing to point out its striking deficits). I would like to see Congress actually try to tackle the root issues concerning the de facto price gouging for this drug among others.
