Honors student sues because she can't read or write

Do I need to point out the accountant thing again? C'mon, renee.

Average ranges from $78K - $270K.

I'm paid well. I'm not poor or even close to poor. I work in a low-income district and probably make at least two times what most of the parents make. A lot more than that for others.

Oh? So how much is that?

That's a great salary.
I don’t know many teachers who start at $78,000 and have the capacity to earn 270,000. But be a good girl and keep justifying for teachers not to get raises.. keep underestimating the importance of your job
$80,000is@great salary….”for a girl”. You say I don’t answer what I think teacher should make, and that is why I give the comparisons to lawyers and accountants who make so much more than teachers.. who taught them?
Well, at least we pay college professors a decent salary. I made a speech at Columbia University and was offered a an opportunity to teach there. I never even discussed salary because I was going to retire in a few years, but I definitely would have made more.

For the second time, I am not against raises for teachers.

Please stop demeaning me because we’re having a disagreement.

How much do you think I should be paid?

you think you’re very well paid. I guess we just have different values..
I cannot give you a specific number

Okaaaay. What do you say would be an appropriate salary for you as a teacher?

I cannot give you a specific number

Why not? You've given numbers the entire time in this thread (although, some of them have been exaggerated). So why can't you give a specific number for what a teacher should make?

Since I can’t give a specific amount and you think you’re very well paid. What do you think teachers should earn?. For one thing I believe they should earn six figures

There ya go. So you think I should make 6 figures. What do you base that on? Are you taking into account years, experience, education, etc.?

I think teachers should be paid based on how well they do their job, not how many years they have been teaching in a specific district. Some great teachers definitely should be making 6 figures. Others have been teaching 25 years and are horrible teachers so they shouldn't be making 6 figures. Do you agree?

That’s why I say that we shouldn’t have tenure for teachers, but we should pay those who are good great money . Are you aware that the lowest paid are in the red states, and their education level is in the pits. And the best educated are most mostly the blue states and those teachers are paid better. Think there might be a correlation?

Maybe.

Should teachers who don't get good evaluations be making 6 figures?

No…. .thats my tenure gripe.
In my speeches, I say that I believe teaching is a talent… some have it and some don’t and if they don’t, they shouldn’t be in teaching. One of my readers emailed me and she was having terrible problem with discipline. I told her she could call me and the first thing she said was., “ let me tell you what the animals did today”. She certainly did not belong in the classroom because she wasn’t even smart enough not to say that to me.. I told her she should consider a job in a zoo

Maybe.

Should teach era who get great evaluations be making six figures?

Maybe. Depends on the area, his/her education, experience, etc.

I know a teacher exactly like that. No one like that should be getting anywhere close to 6 figures for teaching.

And what about the great teachers?

What do you think should be the top salary?

Again, that depends on the area. The answer will be different depending on the cost of living. In my area, I think $100K should be the top salary. But that would only be for teachers who are consistently excellent. What do you think?

When I taught in New York, I could never have supported a family. My income was secondary.. but you are right. A cost of living is important.. how do you judge a teacher for excellence?

Various things - rapport with students, how well they teach their area of expertise, how willing they are to learn more about the areas they are weaker on, willingness to help other teachers, attention to how things are organized and scheduled in order to create the best environment for kids to learn, communication with parents, etc.

She's not alone. Every year we have kids going into 5th, 6th, 7th grade who never got the English phonics they needed in elementary school. And, of course, no one is going to teach them that in middle school and high school.

Because they are supposed to have already learned that. High school teaches Shakespeare and Essays and reports on Hitler... not sentence structure and what a verb or noun is... the failure of students lies solely on the first few years of education and then the next few for trying to pass these kids along.

Because we're not allowed to keep kids back who are failing (unless it's kindergarten). And if they come into kindergarten already behind because they have shitty parents, they're most likely always going to be failing or at least behind their peers for the rest of their school lives.

I didn't blame the teachers...
I am blaming the education system...

...and that really means the District Board and the Principal who are more concerned with pass rates and optics than they are about edcuation.
