Xiomara Castro: Honduras votes in first female president

And this is the end of 12 years of National Party rule, and the end of the Presidency of drug trafficker and religious nutjob Juan Orlando Hernández (who served as President for two terms despite the Constitution only allowing one, he did not try for a third term).

I wish nothing but the best for her and for the people of Honduras.

Honduras, the original Banana Republic. Good luck Honduras. Last coup was 2009. Plenty of CIA and US special forces activities. The country has it's current problems with violent crime, drug trafficking and large-scale migration to the US. The good news is her rival congratulated her and pledged to work with her. A sign of unity. Unlike some other countries.

Congratulations to Honduras on an apparently honest election.

yes, and she will likely be the next dictator as they are moving to throw out the Constitution and go the way of Venezuela. I cry for my in-law's country....very glad we aren't there now.

she is the wife of Mel Zelaya. Zelaya ran off with every last penny in the treasury. The problems are about to get much worse.

That's one way to unify a country and get it going in one unalterable direction.

which sucks for that country.....because just like Juan Orlando Hernandez, the Zelaya's are well known in drug trafficking circles. El Chapo gave Mel Zelaya a private airplane as a payment for letting him go through the country unchecked.

And the new Tegucigalpa airport opens in a few weeks, the old one was pretty dangerous from what I heard, short runway, high altitude, weather issues...

the new one really won't be that much better; it is close to where the old one was. There is a very tall mountainous area in Tegucigalpa. It isn't smart to have an airport in that area, even with it being the country's political capital. San Pedro Sula is much flatter, closer to the ocean and is easier to navigate. The area of Tegus has a very tall mountain range, has wind and nasty weather pretty often.

Palmerola is Comayagua but that is like Manhattan and New York City....they are one and the same.

Which types of relationships explain why her opponents shake her hand, wish her well and speak in the spirit of unity.

absolutely. However, the losers are always the people.
I have pictures of me in company with Honduran politicians. They are dirtbags of the highest order. I was pretty innocent when I was younger, but as time went by my eyes opened up and I avoid them like the plague.
Here is a good article in English

And that's different from Hernandez how? Organized crime has deep tentacles into every political party in the country. Hernandez was involved in drug trafficking and money laundering schemes himself. It's not changing anything in Honduras, since that money is in every political pocket.

Edit: Ah I see you were actually pointing out that both sides are deep in the dirt. Must have misread.

yes, I most certainly was pointing out that both sides and some others threw in are deeply corrupt and involved in drug trafficking.

El Toro Colorado (Chepe Handal) was a part of the Liberal party, Mel Zelaya and Xiomara are former members of the liberal party, they are now some offshoot party that is even more corrupt than the liberal party was. Chepe Handal is under indictment and there is an extradition order by the DEA in the US. Now that Xiomara is taking power, they will probably release him. He has been fighting extradition for a few years.

Yes, they all are deep.
Hernandez is being extradited, but ironically all of Xiomara's friends and family have received amnesty from any kind of extradition or prosecution....of course
