Hillary Clinton is scheduled to speak at the Virginia Democratic party's Jefferson-Jackson Dinner on Friday in northern Virgnia. The event is from 2-6 p.m. in Fairfax.
Just as the name suggests, the dinner is named for Thomas Jefferson and Andrew Jackson. Both former presidents of the United States. And both former slave owners.
Regarding Jefferson, CBS has explained that "The author of the Declaration of Independence, who wrote that all men are created equal, owned 600 slaves over his lifetime, and in addition to his legitimate children almost certainly fathered at least six children borne by his slave, Sally Hemings."
Jackson, known affectionately as the people's president, owned about a quarter of the number of slaves as Jefferson. As thehermitage.com reports, "In all reality, slavery was the source of Andrew Jackson’s wealth.
While Democrats traditionally speak at Jefferson-Jackson dinners, Republicans speak at a dinner named after the president who freed the slaves, Abraham Lincoln.
Hillary to Speak at Event Named After Slave Owners | The Weekly Standard
Symbolism has been all the rage these past couple of weeks since the tragedy in South Carolina. Various politicians have spoken out...especially about how keeping a flag in public view prevents our people from moving away from racism. Hillary is one of those politicians.
I find it rather hypocritical of her, then, to speak at an event named after two slave owners. Does she care about one symbol...but not another?
Perhaps Hillary should decline to speak at an event that idolizes slave owners and perhaps the Virginia Democratic Party should stop idolizing slave owners and remove their names from this event.

No pun intended but we don't live in a black and white world. We have to allow for nuance and gradations of culpability.
I do believe a time will come in our future when we remember the historical contributions of people like Jefferson but cease to honor them as people. Our society, and humanity in general, is slowly becoming civilized. No, humanity is not civilized yet. We are currently at that point in the transition where we start to question the things we used to hold dear during our more barbarous times. I personally am at the point in the transition where while I would no longer condone naming new buildings after people who took part in atrocities, regardless of whatever good things they did, I am also not ready to change all the names on all the buildings and streets quite yet. Perhaps that time will come. For now I am satisfied in letting them vanish through attrition.
If you decide to hang a picture of Jefferson in your house I might frown at your decision. But I am not going to judge you for spending a $20 bill or giving a speech in a building named after him.
I also think you can be a homophobic bigot and still use an Apple product without being a hypocrite.
To say that because society has reached the point that it questions the merits of the Confederate flag that it must then be consistent across the board is not reasonable. Change takes time.
As Voltaire said, "Perfect is the enemy of Good".

I swear, the citizens of this once great country are really incredibly stupid. They cheer her when she speaks in nasty ugly terms about hedge fund managers, when not only are they donating to her in droves, her ****ing daughter is married to one of them. These same dimwits will applaud her and the Virginia Democrats as they huff and puff and pontificate about the Confederate Flag, all the while celebrating two slave owners.
It's depressing.
I don't know which I find more pathetic...
The bald-faced, unapologetic hypocrisy from Hillary...or the lemming-like, thoughtless support she gets from the useful idiots who make up her base.
I think the blame for the name should be aimed at those who named it, not for those who speak there. Why not try to keep political discussions on sensible subjects.
Yes. No justification required. If they had named that event after Benedict Arnold, would Hillary be justified in speaking there?
If the event touted a President who is alleged to being an alcoholic, would Hillary be justified in speaking there?
Or does she get a pass because she didn't name the event?
Come on...liberals are known to favor style over substance. Stick with the style, eh?
