My daughters junior and senior year in High School (Wife and I sent her to a private STEM academy)she did not receive any textbooks; she was issued a laptop with all her text books uploaded, and she was required to do her homework on it as well as submit her papers, essays, and other school work on it and use the school drop box for completed assignments.
The beauty of it was that parents could log on (read access only) and monitor her homework and see what assignments students had not completed or turned in late.
I like to think it helped parents stay involved.

The only problem I see with that is that kids have different learning styles. I've sat with kids who struggled to absorb what was on their screen and as soon as we transferred the concept to pencil and paper, something clicked.

While students need to be taught how to use technology, they shouldn't be spending more than half of their school day staring at a screen.

Teaching elementary school for a long time, I've found that if you give kids the choice of having a movie party or taking them outside for an extra recess, they overwhelmingly want an extra recess.
