In a recent interview, the actress Dee Wallace, who portrays Elliot’s mother, revealed that Steven Spielberg originally wanted a romantic subplot between her character and the alien but decided to drop it from the final cut after the two of them argued over it. In his show yesterday, Bill Maher said it was a good thing that the romance was left on the cutting room floor. He also said the movie probably wouldn’t be the beloved classic is today if, during the last scene before E.T. boards the spaceship to return his home planet, he turns to Elliot and says, “Oh, and by the way, I ****ed your mom.”

I disagree with Maher. I think it would have been ****ing AWESOME if E.T. had told Elliot that he slept with mommy and then Elliot, in a fit of shocked rage, takes that rifle that you saw earlier in the movie and blows E.T.’s head off. EVERYBODY would have remembered that ending!

I would rather leave the above commentary on the cutting floor.

I'm sure I speak for many here on DP when I say I appreciate this insight into your psyche. It explains a lot.

Just watched E.T. a year or so ago, which hadn't seen since I was a youngin. It's just fine the way it is.
Maybe just finger bang her with that glowing finger. 🤷‍♂️

I was only joking. E.T. is actually one of my favorite movies, and I love it the way it is.

In all seriousness, I couldn’t believe Spielberg wanted that romantic subplot in there. How could he have thought that something like that wouldn’t have hurt the final movie? Then again, the sequel that they were considering making is really bizarre.
