Ichthyoallyeinotoxism[edit]

Ichthyoallyeinotoxism, or hallucinogenic fish inebriation, is a clinical syndrome that refers to a hallucinogenic inebriation of a distressing nature that can arise from consuming hallucinogenic fish. It is characterised by "psychologic disturbances of hallucination and depression. Gastrointestinal disturbance may occur".[61] "Ichthyoallyeinotoxism is a kind of ichthysarcotoxism (fish flesh poisoning) responsible of an unusual clinical feature: it is the unique case of central nervous system ichthyotoxicity. The most frequent signs are dizziness, loss of co-ordination and hallucinations."

Unknown 'toxin' might be DMT (N,N-Dimethyltryptamine), a metabolite of the amino acid L-tryptophan. Sounds pretty fishy to me.

After sleeping on this I came to the tentative conclusion that DMT is not the chemical found in fish that causes hallucinations. The reason for my tentative conclusion: DMT is quickly metabolized by detoxifying enzymes called monoamine oxidases (MAO). In S American ceremonial concoctions, the DMT is mixed with a plant extract that contain different alkaloids that inhibit MAO that are called monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOI). These are typically alkaloids of the harmala category, such as harmaline. I doubt that these funny fish pack both DMT & an MAOI.

As a side note, synthetic molecules have been prescribed as anti-depressants but I believe these have fallen out of favor as they have been superseded by the more recent SSRI class like PROZAC. They also can cause severe problems if a patient mixes an MAOI with a monoamine such as are commonly found in drugs such as nasal sprays.
