GREAT NEWS ! Moscow´s flag is banned at the Australian Open tennis tournament, reports Associated Press. On Jan. 16, during a match between Moscow and Ukraine, fans hung a Moscow flag. The Ukrainian fans responded by calling security and police.

GREAT NEWS , still - Moscow should not be playing. They are playing war.

Last year it was banning Novak Djokovic because he wasn't vaccinated. They have to stay in the news somehow, since Australia is way out of timezone and has a puny domestic audience for tennis.

Frankly, the Australian Open shouldn't be a Grand Slam event at all. Australian tennis players do hit above their weight, given the small population, but Australia is still riding on the reputation of a few long-retired players.

I would de-rate the Australian Open, and instead have the fourth Grand Slam event move between countries like the Olympics.

To be honest, only the US Open deserves to be a perennial Grand Slam event.

thats why I love Australia ! Truly one of the leaders of our Liberal Democratic order

Don't over-estimate the Australian character. They support whoever the US supports. Former Prime Minister John Howard compared it to "paying the premium on our insurance".

In their region, Australia sometimes acts ahead of the US. For instance, leading the UN peacekeeping force when Indonesia was forced by international law to grant independence to East Timor. More recently, Australia is contesting with China for defense and development contracts with small Pacific nations ... but this fits into the same pattern. Dealing with the small Pacific nations takes a degree of humility which neither the US nor China can manage. Australia follows the lead of New Zealand in this, but it's ultimately about serving the US/Australia alliance rather than obvious Australian self interest.

Someday the US may thank Australia for it. Pacific islanders are insular: their culture makes loyalty to outsiders hard for them, but anyone who wins it can keep it for generations. The US simply overlooks the islands they once fought over. "Guadalcanal" is just some place in the sea to Americans, but actually it is the biggest island of the Solomons, where China has the upper hand over Australia in influence right now.

But to Australia, it's not about building a Pacific Empire. It's just "paying the premium on insurance." The US is Australia's insurance, stuck as they are between Asia and bloody nowhere. Strategically, Australia offers both a northern and a southern passage from the Pacific to the Indian Ocean, a big view of the sky in a region where the US has no other reliable allies, a strong voice in the UN (those Pacific nations again) and somewhat a trading partner (though in exports a rival). But on top of that, generations of Australian leaders have made a point of supporting the US militarily, whenever invited to do so. Australia was in Korea, in Vietnam, in Iraq and Afghanistan. All to insure that if Australia ever needs US military support, the President will pick up the phone.

Well Australia is not unique in that. The UK also "pays its dues" and being stronger economically and militarily than Australia, is often considered America's best friend. But I won't stray too far from my point.

I do support US for 100% , US is our leader , death to oriental barbarism . you got your freedom for free, dont you ?

United States is a Pacific country as well as an Atlantic country and Australia/NZ are parts of the British Commonwealth under the monarch of the UK. Australia is a totally faithful ally and New Zealand is back on board with the Western Alliance after some period of eccentric foibles. We need each other.

It was at the G-20 recent meeting in Australia that many of the countries leaders cussed Putin at every sighting, driving him out of the Lucky Country midway through the sessions. The Russian Navy flotilla off Australia for Putin's visit scared no one.

The US is opening embassies in the Solomon islands, Tonga and Kiribati as yet another instance of deploying diplomatic staff to counter China's campaign against America and the West. Washington is opening offices of the National Security Council, Department of Defense, Department of the Interior, and USAID. Potus Biden's Emergency Plan for Adaptation and Resilience that addresses climate change is being implemented throughout the island states of the Pacific. Beijing does nothing about climate with the Pacific island nations.

Washington is coordinating the February 2022 volcano and tsunami relief efforts in Tonga with Australia, Fiji, France, Japan, NZ, UK. The USN Sampson DDG 102 is in Tongan waters to assist the humanitarian relief effort. The Sampson provided humanitarian assistance after the earthquake in Kaikōura, New Zealand, in 2016 and is currently supporting the Australian Defence Force’s relief efforts throughout Tonga. Beijing doesn't do this and managed to send $50,000 relief to the Philippines after a recent devastating typhoon while the US sent the aircraft carrier Reagan based in Japan with massive relief support across the devastated islands.

The US has military assets at the Marshall Islands, Palau, and Guam that are mostly defense platforms. This year the Hawaii National Guard begins training Taiwan reserve forces in Hawaii to upgrade their capability and readiness, in rotation of Taiwan armed forces units. CCP Boyz in Beijing are hollering themselves blue in the face against this but no matter, it's a done deal.
