So independent journalist Gonzalo Lira is free as of this moment, he made a long thread on twitter and several YouTube videos explaining his situation. The TLDR is he was living with his family in Ukraine when the special military operation began and became an independent journalist. Several months ago Ukraines state terror arm, the SBU (the rebranding of the KGB) rousted Mr. Lira from his home with assault rifles and sent him to a prison where he was denied his right to counsel and right to post bail under Ukrainian law, he was finally allowed to post bail after multiple inquiries from the US and Chilean embassies, and after paying what were effectively 70,000 dollars worth of bribes. He has been told he will be convicted of politically motivated charges and sentenced to 5 years at hard labor (mr Lira is 55 and has a heart condition). His crime was posting a video examining the history of Ukraine-Russian relations.

As of now he’s attempting to cross the frontier into Hungary to request asylum. He believes if not granted asylum he will die in prison.

Remember, our leaders are selling Ukraine as a democracy which has constitutional rights, all of Liras rights have been violated.

Linked are his videos and twitter thread.

So, let's clarify.

The US has the EXACT SAME LAW on its books. It has survived every challenge in the Supreme Court.

Espionage Act of 1917.

Of course, had he been arrested by the evil Putin regime, he would have been dead long ago.

So yeah, this thread is a steaming pile of crap.

The "independent journalist" is a Russian propagandist.

I suspect if we were at war with a foreign country that invaded us, we would not tolerate some guy pushing there propaganda here.

That's right. In fact, we would arrest them and put them on trial, just as Ukraine is doing.

That’s not correct. Jane Fonda engaged in actual pro-NVA propaganda and was never charged with anything.

The Ukrainians are nazi thugs.

I’m sure people here would be happy if the US Government arrested and disappeared me for not spouting the official line. This is how leftists hate their opponents

Show where she broadcasted it in the US. She didnt. That's kind of the key. So the comparison doesn't wash.

And yes, people were arrested under this law, for example, for making false statements about success of the enemy. There is a lot to the law.

Did he cross into Hungary yet? I will breathe a sigh of relief only after he posts from Hungary. Still, things are looking up for him

I never said or implied that it did, nor do i need to do so.
The speech Gonzalo engaged in would not qualify as criminal under the espionage act, the last uses of the espionage act in world war 1 involved attempting to disrupt the draft.

Not opposing the war in general

That’s irrelevant.
Mm, sorry, its not, as that is what this journalist did. He made every effort to do so.

And if ya did that here during wartime, you would, indeed, be arrested.

Indeed it would.

First hit on Google, even.

false statements intended to interfere with military operations; attempts to incite insubordination or obstruct the recruitment of troops; and false statements promoting the success of America's enemies.

I hope he made it out. I hope he didn’t try to leave through exit control in Ukraine.

He should’ve found a remote area and crossed the border on foot then surrendered to Hungarian police to request asylum.

I am following this on social media.

The thing is when Gonzalo was released he was ordered to surrender his passports and be ankle monitored but the Ukrainian guards didn’t ankle monitor him and gave him his Chilean passport and citizenship card to them.

Yeah. Lira didn’t do any of that.

And in any event subsequent Supreme Court rulings on free speech would likely mean these provisions are largely unenforceable

I have no sympathy for fascist spies
I agree, the Ukrainian intelligence services are the worse and they should be labeled state sponsors of terror like the Iranian revolutionary guard

$70thousands worth of bribes! wow

I doubt it.
