Jesus, what an absolutely tragic story. Yet more evidence to suggest that, actually, your family is less safe with firearms in the house than without. A reminder that guns, (unlike swimming pools), have the potential to escalate situations in a deadly manner.

I wouldn't wish this on any parent (or child) in the world - but I sincerely hope that the parents are taking full responsibility for their negligence in leaving an unsecured firearm in their home.

Where the **** were their parents? And why the **** did a 13 year old have access to a gun?

Honestly that last sentence worries me a bit. I blame the parents far more than I do a 9 year old boy having an argument with his sister.

And 9 year old boys fight with their sisters all the time. Luckily most of them don't have access to guns to do something about the fight.
 

You're right. If the boy here didn't have access to a gun he would only have found a different weapon. He probably would have made a fertilizer bomb or drove a truck through her bedroom or something. These evil people always find a way
 

This a horrible story. But to open a thread pushing the anti gun agenda based on this event is dishonest.

Sad event, but I blame the owner of the firearm. Not a responsible gun owner. I assume it is a parent.

On a completely specualative note, I wonder what game they were playing.

Firstly I just reported a story - I didn't mention anything about gun control (beyond pointing out guns are dangerous, which is fact based upon the story). You are the one who bought up gun control.

Secondly. Even if this was a gun control discussion, why would it be dishonest to discuss gun control in a thread about guns being misused? Sorry, you don't get to just dismiss rhetoric off-hand like that.

If there was a story about [insert hypothetical Democratic politician] eating babies, you would absolutely be in position to push an anti-[said politician] agenda in that thread.

You literally just said that it's fact that a 9 year old boy would build a goddamn fertilizer bomb to kill his 13 year old sister for hogging a video game controller. And I'm the one committed to my narrative??? Spare me.
 

When you open your thread using one tragic story involving a gun that should have been secured well out of reach of any child, "Yet more evidence to suggest that, actually, your family is less safe with firearms in the house than without." you assume that ALL gun owners with small children are as irresponsible with guns as this family obviously was....It is a dishonest premise.
 

You're completely ignoring the key statement "Yet more evidence to suggest that".

And my statement is perfectly justified - this incident is evidence that households are safer without guns than with. A single data point but still. I never made any sweeping statements about ALL gun owners.
 
Wow. Crazy how many people are jumping down my throat re: gun control. It's almost as if they think discussions about incidents involving guns are appropriate places to discuss gun control. What a 180 from their prior positions.

No...YOU made the idiotic fertilizer bomb comment but I thought you were smart enough to udnerstand that the response to your comment is that he would have used whatever he had at his disposal. No? Do you REALLY need me to spell every comment out for you?

Here are your options.
1-Little Timmy is a wonderful doscile young lad innocently playing video games, when the gun called to him from the other room and placed a magic spell on him, causing him, against his will, to go, find the gun, get the gun, and kill his sister.
2-Without a gun in his home, little Timmy, the same kid that got violently angry enough to kill his sister, would ahve just sat ther calmly.
3-Little Timmy, without a gun in his home, got violently angry and smashed his sister in the head witha firepalce poker because Little Timmy obviously has 'issues'.

Which do you think is most likely?

People commit fatal violent crimes all the time. You arent stupid enough to believe this kid would have just calmly sat there if there wasnt a gun in the house. I know you arent that stupid. SO...knowing that, and knowing he would have lashed out violently and potentially fatally regardless...what exactly is your point? Oh yeah. You want to ignore reality and say "See? Guns!"

Huh. Maybe I'm wrong about the whole capacity thing.......
 

Number 2, without the slightest shadow of a doubt. A 9 year old doesn't have to be a violent psychopath to mis-use a gun, or to simply not grasp the consequences of using one. Maybe, without a gun, he would have pulled his sisters hair. Maybe he would have thrown a lego at her. Little boys do this to their sisters all the time. I did it to my little sisters when they annoyed me. Thankfully, these two acts don't have the same kind of dropping power as a sig sauer.

And if you think the answer is 1 or 3. Then wow, I really don't know what to say to you. Do you have children? Your grasp on reality is astonishingly fragile.

I'd pump the brakes on 'evil'. We definitely could stand to know more about the kid. Hell...there might even be something to learn in all of this. 9 year olds dont have the most self control. I'd like to know more about the family, the circumstances, and yes...about the gun and where it was stored. Id say there is an opportunity to learn. Id say there may also be liability on the part of the parent. However...I dont think the availability of a firearm would have prevented the 9 year old from attacking...I just think it would have changed the means.
 

No, but you imply that with your wording....And you did it again right here...The simple fact that this household neglected their obligation to secure their weapons has NO bearing on what other families with weapons in the house do with theirs....You are making these types of statements because you don't feel that anyone should own a gun....I understand that, but it is a right laid out in our constitution so your feelings on that are irrelevant...

About this family, all I can say is wow, there is no way for me to even imagine what they are going through right now....But as a responsible gun owner, who while raising my children with guns in the house, they were always secured under lock, and the kids were always trained to fully respect the nature, and power that these weapons had....That was clearly lacking in this household.
