WASHINTTON (AP) — Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has undergone surgery for pancreatic cancer, apparently at an early stage.
The court said the 75-year-old Ginsburg had the surgery Thursday at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York. She will remain in the hospital for seven to 10 days, said her surgeon. Dr. Murray Brennan. This was according to a release issued by the court.
Ginsburg, a justice since 1993, had colon cancer earlier in her tenure.
The cancer was discovered during a routine, annual exam late last month at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md.
The court said a CAT scan revealed a tumor measuring about 1 centimeter across the center of the pancreas.
Ginsburg was close to retiring. Her retirement may be pushed up a little now. I am glad that this was caught so early, and she can look forward to many years of retirement in relatively good health.
I am sure that she will step down, and Obama will then nominate a replacement. My prediction? A crapstorm in the Senate, and this is where I strongly disagree with Republican threats to use the "nuclear option" during Bush's term in office. Why? Because it makes it easier for Obama to now use the same strategy. Still doesn't make it right, but Republicans opened up a Pandora's box when they decided on a "take no prisoners" approach to judicial nominations. And I believe that Obama will be ruthless enough to make use of the opening Republicans gave him. The nuclear option will definitely come up in the Senate during Obama's term.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg underwent surgery at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York on Thursday for what was apparently early-stage pancreatic cancer, according to a statement released by the Supreme Court.
The surgery followed the discovery of a lesion during an annual check-up in late January at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. A CAT scan revealed a small tumor, approximately one centimeter across, in the center of the pancreas, the court’s statement said.
According to Dr. Murray Brennan, the attending surgeon, Justice Ginsburg will most likely remain in the hospital approximately for seven to 10 days,
According to the American Cancer Society, pancreatic cancer has one of the lowest five-year survival rates, at about 5 percent overall for all stages.
Some very sad news about one of our great jurists. Let's all pray for a speedy recovery for Justice Ginsburg!

Pancreatic cancer is one of the most deadly cancers: Nearly 38,000 cases a year are diagnosed and overall, fewer than 5 percent survive five years.
The reason: Fewer than one in 10 cases are diagnosed at an early stage -- like Ginsburg's appears to be -- before the cancer has begun spreading through the abdomen and beyond. That's because early pancreatic cancer produces few symptoms other than vague indigestion.
Hmmm...maybe that's why she was always falling asleep on the job.
I think you're referring to Thomas.
edit: Nope, I forgot Ginsburg did it too.
I don't remember Thomas falling asleep. I saw pictures of Ginsburg sleeping though!
Of course you didn't see a picture of Thomas falling asleep--he's a conservative and you NEVER have anything negative to say about a conservative.
Nice comment to make about a woman who has been diagnosed with cancer. Really classy, Invayne.
BTW, trying to turn this into a Conservative vs Liberal pissing contest is about as low as someone can go.
Really, how bad was a comment 'about falling asleep'. Get a life. Do you follow Ginsberg's health on a regular basis? You don't? Why you're just a phoney, you don't really care about her. What good is your caring when she's dying?Of course you didn't see a picture of Thomas falling asleep--he's a conservative and you NEVER have anything negative to say about a conservative.
