BBC NEWS | Europe | Gas solution closer, says Putin
Quote from article:
(Mr Putin said it was intolerable that Russia be expected to supply the "technical gas" needed by Ukraine to keep pressure up in its pipes to transfer gas to Europe.)
Here we go again, Putin must dwell in 'cloud cuckoo land'.
If the pressure in Pipelines to convey gas across Ukraine drops making such passage untenable it could only be because Ukraine is taking gas from the line in order to power compressors required to push that gas down to the next compressor station (typically around 100 - 200Km downstream).
Russia is quite obviously not prepared to supply that gas.
Ukraine is not willing to donate it's gas reserves to power up it's compressors to push gas for Russia onward to European customers.
Russia should but probably will not provide compressor gas to Ukraine.
For me this is a typical weaselly move by Russia.
If the gas is not powered by compressors what happens is that the pressure in the pipeline decreases downstream.
There are only 2 other reasons where pressure might decrease.
1) Pipeline leaks.
2) Taking gas out of pipeline.
With 2) it can be determined quite easily if this is done in order to power up compressors, if it is then the amount taken should be relatively consistent.
If it is not for compressor fueling then it is possible that Ukraine may be diverting gas for it's own use.
This story has a way to run, but is doubtful if we the general public will ever learn the truth.
