The following is a Letter to the Editor, published in the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette on June 2, 2009. The author made some interesting comments, which I thought I'd share:
In 1787, Alexander Tyler of the University of Edinburgh wrote: "A democracy is always temporary in nature; it cannot exist as a permanent form of government."
He clarified his position by adding: "A democracy will continue to exist up until the time that voters discover that they can vote themselves gifts from the public treasury. From that moment on, the majority always vote for the candidates who promise the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that every democracy will finally collapse due to loose fiscal policy which is followed by a dictatorship. The average age of the world's greatest civilizations from the beginning of history has been roughly 200 years. During those 200 years, these nations always progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, from spiritual faith to great courage, from courage to liberty, from liberty to abundance, from abundance to complacency, from complacency to apathy; from apathy to dependence, from dependence back to bondage."
The United States is now somewhere between complacency and apathy with almost 40 percent of the population already having reached the government dependency phase. Now the redistribution of wealth is about to go into full gallop. The door to democracy is ajar and Marxist-based socialism is about to cross the threshold.
One day we may see the Statue of Liberty with a tattered, hand-painted sign hanging from her shoulder. The inscription: "Welcome to the Socialist People's Republic of Amerika." Have a nice day comrades.

For what it's worth, the United States DOES seem to be following the path mentioned in the above letter. Is the country on a firm path to socialism? If so, what sort of socialism...democratic socialism, or the Marxist socialism predicted by Alexander Tyler?
Can the United States stop this progression, or is it an inevitable fate, dictated by history? What say you?
