Furiosa, a prequel in the Mad Max universe, was released this weekend. Box office numbers have not been good and that has prompted the idiot blue-checkers on Twitter to gripe about the movie. They're pretty much all males (ages 20-40ish), far right, anti-woke, Christian fundamentalist, anti-women dorks. They claim the bad numbers are proof nobody wanted a Mad Max universe movie where the central character is a woman (btw, Fury Road's central character was a woman).

But one of the ironies is that these same people who mock the movie for its box office numbers also love to mock pop culture, in general. None of them would say Beyonce's music is superior because it makes money.

Reviews weren't even bad. In fact, they were amazing. Some even argued Furiosa was better than Fury Road (I don't know yet, personally. Wife and I are seeing it next weekend).

In reality, it's just another opportunity for these losers to criticize any piece of media that features a woman playing a central powerful role. Hell, most of them probably consider Immortan Joe the 'good guy.'

Without commenting too much on the X brigade of hate, I personally am not particularly motivated to see it because I find origin stories to be played out. It feels like a rote Hollywood money grab: let's pick some random character from some movie that made money, and do an origin story! Not once during Fury Road did I ever think, "gosh, I'd love to see a movie that tells me how Furiosa lost an arm and became a badass, I'm so curious to know her backstory!" So, that's why I don't plan to spend money watching it.

I don't care one whit whether the protagonist is male or female.

In Mad Max Fury road Furiosa was the best character. I will watch this one when it comes to streaming.

What is funny is all the big tough white Christian males wanting to watch big sweaty muscular men wrestling, rather than rather attractive women.

Tom Hardy is a great actor, but his performance in Mad Max was a let down. Charlize carried that movie

So this is a rant thread about how some people don't like the same movies that you like?
Or is this a rant thread some people have differing opinions in what they'd like for entertainment than you?

Not a rant, if white conservative males prefer to watch big sweaty men wrestle, all the more power to them

It really lowers your argument when you use all these weird political buzz words like incels and antiwoke.

I think a much better explanation is that fewer people are going to movie theaters when they can just wait for it to stream for free from the comfort of their own home. I personally don't go to theaters anymore. It's expensive and there's always disruptive idiots. Plus you can't pause the movie to go to the washroom and movies tend to be 3 hours long these days.

Exactly

I want to see this movie but not at a cost of $60 for two people plus some over priced popcorn and drinks

Are you kidding me right now???? $30/ticket?

They are only $20 by me and I'm in SoCal.

However, either way, the comments were more to the effect that a woman can't beat up men, etc. They were saying they wouldn't pay to see *that*, not that they wouldn't pay to see any movie.

I’ve no issue with strong female characters but I like to see it earned. Atomic Blonde, Everything, Everywhere All At Once, the original animated Mulan, Alien, and countless other old and contemporary examples are out there. Less interesting to me are those movies like Madame Web and the Captain Marvel where there is no hero’s journey and the protagonist faces no meaningful challenge.

To be fair, there are plenty of movies with male leads that make precisely the same mistakes… think Vin Diesel, The Rock or Jason Stratham movies today, or Steven Seagal or Chuck Norris movies in yesteryear.

I don’t consider it a matter of woke or not but just sloppy filmmaking.

Hollywood's next move is to brainwash us with films about ciswomen defeating transwomen in athletic competition.

Okay... so let's pretend it's not about the expense of going to a movie.

1) Furiosa is the prequel movie that nobody asked for. We already know Furiosa's backstory from the other Mad Max film. They didn't need to elaborate. Plus this movie doesn't really feature Max in it. The Furiosa/Max duo was what made the first movie so spectacular, which obviously can't be repeated in a prequel.

2) Prequels and sequels, 9 times out of 10, are utterly terrible these days. Franchise-milking has caused many to turn away automatically.

3) Although this movie is not woke whatsoever and was apparently decent, movie goers are so sick of woke crap that if they get even one whiff of possible woke film making (i.e. girlboss lead that is badly written and emasculates men in the process), they will just avoid paying for the movie. It's practically Pavlovian at this point. It's unfortunate because the rare movie with a genuinely strong female lead risks getting overlooked now because there is such a wash of terribly-written female-lead movies drowning them out. Hollywood has created a PR nightmare when it comes to their current version of strong female leads. It has turned off audiences big time.

However, Charlize Theron did a pretty great job in the first movie. Her Furiosa was vulnerable, determined, ruthless, protected the innocent, and teamed up with and respected men -- something a strong female lead should do. So I don't think this point is as major as the OP of this thread makes it seem.

4) Chris Hemsworth plays a super stereotypical villain. We've all seen it before (i.e. Jason Mamoa in Fast X). For me, it was actually him that made me not want to see the movie.

Good post, agree 100%.

I absolutely would have watched a sequel featuring Theron and Hardy facing off against a well written Evil Hemsworth.

Sadly that is not the movie we were given.

Canada, about 20 for the ticket and add $10 for drink and popcorn

Aside from the criticism about the female hero, we saw this movie today because we are big fans of the Mad Max franchise. It was 2 and a half f***ing hours long, was convoluted and spent too much time on the heroine's life as a child. There were lots of big crashes and crazy killings as one would expect, but we just walked away thinking "meh". I don't agree that the main character was Furiosa played by Anya Taylor. Chris Hemsworth stole the show in his role as Dementus.

Anyway, we thought the last movie with Charlize Theron was much better. We weren't disappointed but we weren't impressed either. Just sayin'.

And we don't buy popcorn. We smuggle in Bunch-A-Crunch and Snow Caps in our pockets and only pay for a drink. :ROFLMAO:

In all the decades I've been alive, I never realized Mad Max needed a prequel. Hollywood: either come up with something original, or do a shot-for-shot remake of the original if you feel the graphics have not aged well.

Wow, you found three tweets by random dopes nobody ever heard of. What a super sleuth.

I'll wait to see it before making a judgement on it.

As for these losers on twitter..they whine for clicks

Also, you don't have to be a misogynist or racist to dislike needless gender swaps or race-lifts.

True but this isn't that

It depends, but what I do think we'll start seeing with these kind of movies is a reaction to the strategy of maximizing IP, which means studios and other content creators are looking to bank financial success off the back of their proven money making IP. It's why there will be more LOTR movies, and Harry Potter series etc. which is suspect will get people tired of the endless rehashing really fast since they're already showing signs of this.
