Just reading in the local news about a scrub fire that had started to spread alongside a road here in New Zealand. It's peak summer here and there have already been a few fires, but nothing really bad yet. Even so, every new fire has the potential to be bad still. There was apparently a traffic queue next to the fire (not sure why) and in the queue were a couple of guys who clean building exteriors. Turns out they had their water tank used for the building cleaning, and their hoses/pressure washers, and their PPE so they pulled up to the fire and became instant fire fighters until the real guys in red trucks could arrive. By all accounts they did a great job, but reckoned it was pretty damn hot. What's the chances of that happening.

Great job guys, whoever you are.

Being summer here it was almost certainly a couple of guys in T shirts and shorts, with hairy legs ending in woollen socks and steel capped boots. This is the dress standard for the average NZ 'tradie' in summer. Not what you would want to roll up to a fire in. Which might be why they were complaining about how hot they were getting. Nice story in these days of truly awful fires.

Friends of ours in Australia were caught in a major bush fire a few weeks back. Probably larger than any of the LA fires in area, but mostly out among farms and forest rather than anywhere urban. Fire went straight through their farm, but most of the stock survived somehow. Fortunately they live in a nearby village as they were still waiting to build a home on the farm. Flames got close to the village as well, but a combination of wind changes and fire fighting saved the village. They had evacuated as the village was expected to burn. Talking to them for a couple of days when they didn't know of their home had survived gave me a little insight into how the folk in LA must be feeling. I've lived through a few earthquakes, hurricanes/cyclones, small tsunamis, floods etc, but never been anywhere close to a major fire thankfully. I'm hoping that won't change any time soon.
