As punishment for buying Russian oil, President Trump is doubling the tax on goods imported from India, jeopardizing a relationship decades in the making.

I would not piss India off on matters economic. It will be a powerhouse if it is not already one. Further, if there is ever a China Taiwan explosion, the USA will need the help of the locals, i.e. India.

But, more relevantly, Humpty is willing to take a huge swing at India's face for buying Russian oil, yet, once again demonstrating his supreme hypocrisy, he applauds and pats the hand of the seller of that oil to India. Fair dinkum......WTF?

There's that, and there is an absence of tyrannical tariffs and other economic sanctions, (including direct action against the overseas assets of all the Igors) by the USA directly against Russia.

Come on Team USA!

Trump is violating his own "America First" with using sanctions to drive foreign policy.
No good can come from any USA involvement in anything to do with Ukraine

Alienating India for no gain. Once again China wins without lifting a finger! An enraged Modi took a long trip to China where Xi was waiting for him with open arms.

So do liberals want sanctions against Russia, or are sanctions against Russia bad? Or are they picking a middle ground of virtue-signaling, but ultimately mediocrely effective sanctions?

I don't speak for 'liberals' only for me. Yes, I want sanctions against Russia. Where are they in comparison with the sanctions (tariffs) imposed on every other bastard?

Obviously they support sanctions against russia

I'm good with it. The more and larger the tariffs the sooner the American people will feel real pain and wake up to what Trump is doing to his own citizens.

a "punitive tariff" of 25% on India just for buying Russian oil ? has got to be the dumbest idea yet. It's using the American trade
(whatever happened to "America First") to facilitate foreign policy..more blow back from our dumb engagement in Ukraine war

WASHINGTON/NEW DELHI, Aug 27 (Reuters) - President Donald Trump's doubling of tariffs on goods from India to as much as 50% took effect as scheduled on Wednesday, escalating tensions between the world's two largest democracies and strategic partners.

A punitive 25% tariff imposed due to India's purchases of Russian oil adds to Trump's prior 25% tariff on many products from India. It takes total duties to as high as 50% for goods such as garments, gems and jewellery, footwear, sporting goods, furniture and chemicals - among the highest imposed by the U.S. and on par with Brazil and China.

India's Commerce Ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment. However, a Commerce Ministry official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said exporters hit by tariffs would receive financial assistance and be encouraged to diversify to markets such as China, Latin America and the Middle East.

No, this statement is really dumb.
you are unable to post any rebuttal so you snippet my post. I'd bet you dont support tariffs, but you can't seem to grasp a bigger idea
then a snippet

You want to blame the tariffs as part of a dumb blowback due to the Ukraine War.

And not the economically illiterate dumbass who's doing it.

Well Trump does stupid things, it's to be expected. Just gonna push consumer prices up on Americans.
and for what? not even economic gain (which true or not is a reason for tariffs) - just moronic secondary sanctions for a war that is none of our business

Does the magatry want sanctions against Russia?

no. getting into tariffs over foreign policy is counterproductive and violates Trump's America First agenda
tariffs are an economic tool -sanctions on Russia dont work to change Russian behavior- why would secondary tariffs?

Well Trump is in it to "win" it, lol.

Don't think this is the last of the moronic things Trump does. Every day is a new opportunity.

MAGA is like my wife when I had to take her credit card away from her for being stupid with money and almost always overpaying (in this case Trump/MAGA are driving up the cost of tons of things which is insane and killing American families at the exact moment when companies aren't hiring as much or cutting back).

And, yeah, I did that. And it saved us way back then and decades later she thanked me.

So, MAGA, stop Trump from being insane. And then thank yourselves decades later.

I have severe doubts on a lot of tariffs. we dont know the inflationary effects yet, but driving India away from US markets into diversifying with China more is just dumb.. and ineffective on modifying Russian war behavior

So, Trumps an idiot.

Can we get there?

Because he's responsible for this, not the war in Ukraine.

No sane person would say he was, but he is responsible for this aspect..meaning i agree with you on that much

Trump is an idiot. You should know this by now

Are you referring to some sort of standard that is practiced against Russia by other countries like throughout Western and Central Europe?

Obviously they support sanctions against russia
Well those that are directly and only against Russia will work only until Russia finds a middleman to move their goods, so it sounds like the current US government is responding to this.

Does the magatry want sanctions against Russia?
Apparently about as much as Biden did.

tariffs are an economic tool -sanctions on Russia dont work to change Russian behavior- why would secondary tariffs?
Because if India stops buying Russian oil entirely, the Russians are ****ed.
