Trump knows that his cult of moronic minions are just like he is, because it was his presence on TV that smote them to begin with. Television told them that he was smart, successful and decisive, and they bought that bullshit hook, line, sinker, rod and reel. They never even bothered to look into his many decades long history of business failures, racism, misogyny, infidelity, money laundering, and FRAUD because they were already smitten by the pretty picture they wanted to see. He teases them like a high priced call girl, and they've been drooling over him ever since, still praying for the consummation of his promises which never come, merely morphing into new seductions. They're entranced by him.
