Frederick Forsyth, who wrote bestselling thriller classics like The Day of the Jackal, The Dogs of War and The Odessa FIle has passed at the age of 86. He was a foreign correspondent for Reuters before he wrote his first novel, The Day of the Jackal, inspired by his coverage of an assassination attempt on French premier Charles De Gaulle.
In his autobiography The Outsider: My Life in Intrigue he told how he learned French and German by living with a family where no English was spoken. This total immersion method resulted in a good command of the language with a native accent.
