Forget the 1A. Why should it be a crime to burn any symbol, as long as it is yours?

Other than pollution issues, why should it be a crime to burn the American flag?

What if I wanted to burn the Koran? The Bible? Some other holy symbol?

Let's say the 1st amendment is not the law, or freedom of speech is not in there.

Why should any of the above be a crime?

I can't think of any reasons.

What do you think?

All of this should be considered a protected right. If you want to burn your own flag or bible or whatever, it should be yours to burn.

But again, if you want to burn your own flag or bible it probably just demonstrates your stupidity.

Go ahead, burn it dummy.

Is cross burning a crime?

That was about Trump.

This is about why it should even be illegal to burn symbols as long as they don't belong to someone else.

This thread isn't about Trump. It's about the legality of burning symbols.
Oh. That makes it much more new and interesting.

You're 100% right. It's a matter of property rights. If it's your flag or book, go ahead and destroy it if you want. It should not be a crime to destroy your own property.

Burning is the correct method of disposal according to the US Flag Code.

Is it being done with intent to provoke?

Not as far as I know. Why, do you want to burn a cross?
No, just wondering why Trump would want to make flag burning a crime and not the far more unAmerican act of burning a cross, given its history. Would love it if some reporter would ask him that.

As much as I hate to see people burn the American flag, I have to admit that sadly it's protected by 1st amendment freedom of speech. Now, I have some conditions that ought to be placed upon tis right. The flag you burn should have to be yours. You don't have a right to burn someone else's or to burn flags belonging to any city, state, municipality or any agency of the federal goverment. You don't own those, you can't burn them. You also can't burn them in any area owned by the federal, state or city government without a permit to burn it during a protest or parade.

I'm sure someone could imagine why burning a cross in someone's yard would be a crime.

I understand you can't, but other's can.

Not according to @Airyaman

They can't imagine this would be a crime, according to their posts.
Which should be a greater offense against Americans and American values, burning a flag in protest of something or hugging the flag but refusing to accept election results, storming the Capitol, etc? Trump frees those who beat up cops and others, destroyed property, threatened Pence and Pelosi, but wants to prosecute people who engage in what the Supreme Court says is protected speech. Go figure.

Hey, some people are all about burning crosses, and think that's cool.

Who are we to judge those clearly racist actions, and the people who support them?

It's not a crime to burn any of these things.
