Food desert myth

One of the most ignorant statements I've heard in a long time.

Must be nice to look down on people like that. Please list all these healthy nutritious CHEAP foods. Enlighten those poor fat folk.
Vulk Potatoes bulk Dried beans, bulk rice, bananas cabbage carrots corn oncob chicken thighs liver avacodos many fruits in season.

We are all ignorant of something.

Never heard of vulk potatoes, but regular potatoes are good.

You don't know what 'food desert' means, do you.

Even if this "food desert" is a thing, it doesn't effect most poor fat people. They buy junk food instead of those cheap foods I listed of their own free will. Not because they "have to" out of necessity.

All of the above

I happen to think generalizations are useful, particularly when it comes to disarming popular narratives which are untrue or derived without an ounce of critical thinking.

The myth of the “noble poor” is one such narrative.

Yeah **** the poor and fat people. They're fat and poor because they're stupid. Only wealthy people are smart and have value in society.

The sun beams down on a brand-new day
No more welfare tax to pay
Unsightly slums gone up in flashing light
Jobless millions whisked away
At last, we have more room to play
All systems go to kill the poor tonight

Gonna kill, kill, kill, kill, kill the poor
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill the poor
Kill, kill, kill, kill, kill the poor tonight

Saying that many people are poor due to genetics or antisocial pathologies (or both) doesn’t mean they don’t have value or that we should mass genocide them. Totally unhinged and psychopathic response.

No intelligent person who has been in and around the poverty line thinks this is a community filled with untapped potential and limitless opportunity. This is a demographic which is highly dysfunctional and antisocial. It would be better if we could take a sober look at pragmatic solutions rather than create this mythology which makes us feel good.

Being poor - in and of itself - limits potential and opportunity 🤷‍♀️

Who is saying this?
As for the second bolded, What? lol.

It's a chicken or the egg kind of problem and I happen to think it's more the egg. In fairness, there's an argument I agree with which says that the chicken hatching from a bad egg might produce normal eggs, but raises bad chickens. Obviously it's not all nature in a direct sense. That would be an absurd claim.

Oh I'm saying the bolded. It's statistically demonstrated that this demographic suffers disproportionately from low time preference, impulsive decision making, and a cadre of antisocial pathologies. Throwing money at the situation doesn't really capture the depth of the problem.

I love running into random Dead Kennedys lyrics. That’s what makes this site worth coming back to!

You must be a genetic marvel, a textbook definition of brilliance and success.

Unserious response for an ignorant statement straight out of 1903.

Responding to critical discourse on a subject with something like, "Oh, and you must be so much better." is super revealing - this is a person totally incapable of processing critique. It's not that you disagree, it's that this is the response you chose.

Antisocial behavior is influenced significantly by genetics: https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/psychology/antisocial-behavior
Confirmed by twin studies: https://www.researchgate.net/public...Behavior_from_Childhood_to_Emerging_Adulthood
Time preference and delay discounting is largely genetic: https://ejnpn.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s41983-024-00930-9
Interesting study which indicates peer selection and social strata are largely genetic: https://labs.la.utexas.edu/harden/files/2013/05/Mann-JAP-2016.pdf

I could go on, but it's pointless because you're more interested in some ignorant and fake mythology than you are with observing the data. The issue - which I agree is multifaceted - is more complex than only socioeconomic factors.

Saying that poor people are poor because they're genetically flawed and/or antisocial is ignorant and rooted in a need to perpetuate stereotypes. Next you'll be spouting the virtues of eugenics.

Bluntly speaking, poor people tend to be fat because they're stupid.
Well, and lazy and undisciplined. Food prep requires time and commitment. Exercise the same.
Coincidentally I see far more obese people at MAGA rallies than I do at liberal gatherings.
This issue crosses all boundaries.

Okay, now I'm questioning your literacy. At no point did I claim that poor people are poor only due to genetics. In fact, I've explicitly mentioned that caveat multiple times.

And for what it's worth, "eugenics" is a nebulous and often misused term. Human mating preference is eugenic. The way we raise our children is eugenic. Many of the meritocratic elements of our institutions have eugenic properties.

Anyone who spouts vitriol as this
Bluntly speaking, poor people tend to be fat because they're stupid
should be questioned because they've lost any point they're attempting to make.

I see the myth of the “elitist snob” is not a myth. Thank you.

So, you bring an article from 2018 to our attention…an article that doesn’t even include a link to the “study”…seven years later why?

To drive a message of “poor people are unhealthy because they choose to be” or something?

What’s your point to dragging a seven year old link out here?
It called "Trump is in a world of trouble over the Epstein files and I need to post another silly deflection post".
If you look at the DP Trumpers, it's all that they do now.

Have you seen our HHS Secretary? What are the chances his line becomes impoverished?
