Flying without passport or Star (Real) ID

Don't know if someone suggested it, but you may want to consider getting a passport and getting TSA Pre. Neither is a lot of time or expense. I don't travel internationally much and not at all in last 5 years but don't regret getting and renewing the passport. TSA Pre saves time and hassles especially at bigger airports. Money well spent.
I will be getting a passport as well since I now have my birth certificate. As to the TSA Pre, I've been on the fence about it. I've actually seen where the TSA Pre line is worse than the general. Plus, I try to avoid flying as much as possible because it's just so much of a hassle these days. Delays and rebookings happen way too often for my taste.

Last week I was supposed to fly up and back to Minneapolis in one day. My flight from MSP to MDW (connection) was delayed and I ended up having to fly out the next day. That actually happened to me on another trip late last year.

Not only was my flight back messed up, my flight out of BHM was moved up by 1.5 hours and my connecting flight was changed, with me being assigned the shittiest boarding position on a full flight.

Flying these days is a big hassle in my experience.

It was never pleasant but yeah, it's esp. bad these days.

I've seen that too - the Pre line being longer but it doesn't happen often. I mostly fly out of JFK, LGA or ISP (Islip MacArthur). Pre almost always saves me time at the first two and ISP - far and away my first choice as it's 20 minutes from home and since my flying club is based there I can park for
free - is quiet and hassle free.

I have pretty good luck with airlines. About half my commercial flying is to visit my daughter on the west coast and I almost always use Alaska Air which in my experience is a good carrier and has direct flights from JFK to PDX (sadly not from ISP).

Have been driving to see our other daughter, she's in Lafayette Indiana home of Purdue University, but the last trip there - a couple weeks ago - was a grind, Used to be able to drive 12 hours in one day without a problem but now even with my wife picking up some of it it's becoming a chore. May start flying commercial to see her too. Unfortunately routinely taking one of the club planes on week long trips is frowned upon.

My current "rule of thumb" is that if a drive is 8-9 hours or less (one way) and total time to travel to airport, wait, and fly time is 4-5 hours, I drive.

Went to get Star ID today, waited for 1.5 hours.

Done!
