IN 2021, Orlando FL based BLACK attorney Jerry Girley represented a Kenyan-born BLACK doctor in a discrimination lawsuit against Advent Health. A jury listened to testimony for six days, then awarded the BLACK doctor $2.7MIL. The WHITE Judge, Kevin Weiss, who presided over the trial did not believe the Plaintiff proved discrimination, then decided to overturn the verdict. No surprise, the BLACK doctor and his attorney Jerry Girley did not agree with Judge Kevin Weiss. Jerry Girley criticized the decision to overturn the jury verdict. Jerry Girley practices law with his daughter Brooke. Brooke Girley also criticized the decision to overturn the jury verdict.

Fast forward: Judge Kevin Weiss took umbrage with the criticism from the father-daughter BLACK attorneys. The Florida Bar cited the two attorneys for violating the Code of Conduct.
Another WHITE Judge (appointed by former Gov. Rick Scott, now a U.S. Senator, famous for ripping off Medicare), Lisa Herndon, recommended suspending the father-daughter duo for 30 days and requiring them to complete a workshop on professionalism.

Everything about this Florida Bar case, the two WHITE judges, Kevin Weiss and Lisa Herndon, and the two BLACK attorneys smacks of discrimination!

It takes a lot more than mere criticism to get cited by the Bar. What really happened?

I think all the CAPITAL references to race is why it smacks of discrimination.

I don't see anything else that suggests it.

You can read the article.

It seems to me a stretch. The judge they criticized overturned a jury's decision, which is what the criticized the judge for. Then the Florida Bar apparently attempted to sanction the attorney(s). The article doesn't say much about the Florida Bar, which is something that maybe we need to know more about. Have they become politicized? Don't know.

It's only one article and a brief one at that, but it seems that race could be a factor. There's not enough for me to decide one way or the other, but it does seem like the case is problematic.

The title of this alone shows that White people need to stand up for themselves.

So two lawyers get their $900k payday taken away and cry racism. Nothing new, and nothing has been provided to support their claim.

The recommendation is only a 30 day suspension, so its not designed to be some career killer. The Supreme Court will look at it and decide. I don't know how I am supposed to guess whether the BLACK attorney maintained the professional standards and decorum of his profession.

Everything about the case smacks of discrimination, why exactly? BLACK attorneys; BLACK client; WHITE judge reverses verdict; and WHITE judge recommends suspensions for the BLACK attorneys due to their post verdict conduct? That's it?

BTW- give that blacks make up about 13% of the population in general, wouldn't you expect that black attorneys would be before white judges the vast majority of the time?

Let's take skin color out of this: Jury awards damages, judge for some reason overturns verdict. Okay, that's weird already. The lawyers critisize judge for overturning verdict. Yes, again, sounds like what lawyers probably should do in this situation. Then judge gets pissy and gets the bar to suspend lawyers. Yeah, even if you ignore the possibility of racist undertones here this sounds fishy.

The judge says because of the statements he has received death threats, the bar says “The content of the statements undermines public confidence in the court system and is prejudicial to the administration of justice,”

I think the Judge overruling the jury undermines confidence in the court system personally, even assuming you take race out of it.

Florida voters passed a referendum known as Amendment 4 that opened the door to restoring rights and voting for felons who completed their sentences. Florida legislature diluted said amendment, primarily denying Black former felons from voting.

Gov. DeSantis opposes the teaching of CRT. He promotes a notion of an American history with Happy Slaves.

Brooksville FL city government feels no shame in the name of their city, so named for the famous segregationist, Preston Brooks. He nearly caned a U.S. Senator to death.

Gov. DeSantis has kicked two duly elected State Attorneys out of office due to their WOKE policies.

Gov. DeSantis has appointed 5 out of the 7 current State Supreme Court Justices. Sen. Rick Scott, a former governor, appointed the other 2.

Florida Attorney General, Ashley Moody, signed on to the lawsuit that tried to overturn the 2020 General Election for POTUS.

Shaking my head, as if none of the above reflect current political climate for the 13% Black population in Florida.

I'm not saying there wasn't racism, I'm just saying there's nothing in what you wrote that establishes racism. Simply pointing out the races and the results in litigation doesn't really cut it.

Can’t get to the essence of the issues without scratching under the surface.
