A horrible idea both from a human rights standpoint and because it can destroy an ecosystem. All brought to you by the party of bigoted sadists.

More destruction of this country’s natural habits for bullshit reasons.

Also, this is gonna be at the edge of a beloved national park. The site was intended to be an airport but construction was halted after public outcry due to the environmental impact.

The GOP are just sadistic and destructive morons.

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier said a largely abandoned airfield in the Everglades would be repurposed as a detention facility to house immigrants living in the U.S. illegally with criminal records. He dubbed it "Alligator Alcatraz," saying any detainees seeking to escape would face alligators and pythons in the treacherous wetlands surrounding the site.

On Monday, Uthmeier announced the federal government had "approved" the state's plan to build "Alligator Alcatraz" and other facilities that he said could collectively house as many as 5,000 detainees. He said the facilities could start receiving detainees early next month, calling them temporary.
"There's really nowhere to go. If you're housed there, if you're detained there, there's no way in, no way out," Uthmeier said in an interview with conservative commentator Benny Johnson, describing the "Alligator Alcatraz" facility.

I have to assume these are not your printed text from your own thought processes:

a largely abandoned airfield

Going one step further, I assume that is actually a quote from the article I think I see a link for above those two paragraphs, so let us think about this "abandoned airfield".

I know that isn't the old Homestead AFB, or the Everglades have gotten a whole bunch bigger.

And I remember we used to have something called Alligator Alley down south of the base and populated areas. Well, maybe southwest of the base. Was a long time ago.

ANYWAY, how long ago was that airfield, since abandoned, built? Last month? Last year? Last decade?

Just curious.

And that comment about a "beloved" area of the planet, I suppose that member has never been into that "beloved" area of the planet as a human. There's a very good reason why the name alligator was used for that trail. And those lovely snakes - - - oh sorry, beloved snakes. And those beloved mosquitoes - - - oh yes, we humans just love that place.

But I am very interested in that "abandoned airfield" vocabulary.

If it was under construction and the construction stopped, it wasn't yet an airfield, so then the writer of that piece has misused the vocabulary. Is there a thread around here about that "airfield" or "pre-airfield"? Was there a big complaint about that?

Just looking for a few pieces of information that I - - - Well, looking/asking.

BUT I do love that use of the vocabulary "beloved". That's rich.

Alcatraz reptiles
Sounds like fascist fantasy
We told you guys so.

This makes me think of Sheriff Joe in Arizona. Just need to add the chain gangs.

It was begun in 1968. Link

In some ways this may not be so terrible. A "mostly abandoned" airfield is not natural habitat, and when an area is built up to receive planes it is hard to return to the swamp. And we know Trump wasn't going to let the immigrants go, so them being jailed isn't a surprise either... at least it's not a concentration camp in a foreign country beyond even the tenuous protections of US law.

The part about it being "escape-proof" because of alligators and pythons? I'm not buying it. People go in the Everglades fairly often, after all. Inmates might have to improvise a boat out of unusual materials, or have a friend/hireling come to rescue them, but if they do, they're probably home free from the bloodhounds!

We found the bottom of the barrel relatively quickly, didn’t we?

“Oh come on…this isn’t AS bad as sending them to torture prisons in other countries”

Florida likes tourist dollars.

Put him in the pamphlet, did they?

Thank you for digging up that information.

But I had the impression from the tone of the article in question that all this trouble was very recent and was such a bad thing for the environment because it was a recent stamp of bad human action in some given area of the Everglades. Begun in 1968 seems sort of not so recent.

But, again, thank you for the information.

We're becoming a nation of prisons.

Being an 'American', I'm not proud to live in a country that has the highest incarcerations than any country. That's not just a high number of people imprisoned, but it's the rate of imprisonment relative to the overall population. The United States is significantly higher than any other independent democracy.

Third-world countries, and dictatorship governments, are notoriously 'prison state' countries. They are human rights abusers. El Salvador, Venezuela, N. Korea and even Russia, may be defined as a prison state.
  • North Korea operates large internment camps for political prisoners, where tens of thousands are believed to be held.
  • These camps are known for their harsh conditions, forced labor, torture, and high death rates due to malnutrition, disease, and abuse.
  • Detainees in political prison camps often receive no trial and can be held indefinitely.
Look at the conditions defining North Korea as a 'prison state', then explain what makes the U.S.A. any different from North Korea?

It comes from a philosophy that there is never enough money for a social safety net but there is a neat infinite amount of money to punish people that would be helped by that safety net.
