The virus has hit my county.

The CDC says an adult male resident tested positive for the new coronavirus. He has been self-isolating since he returned from a trip to Wuhan on Jan. 24, officials say.

He has not been hospitalized and has not been very sick. He's currently being treated as an outpatient and has come into contact with very few individuals since he's been home, officials say.

Santa Clara County health officials say the patient will remain in self-quarantine at home while investigators begin to make contact with anyone with whom the patient came in contact.

Dr. Sara Cody, the county's health officer, said that the list of potentially exposed persons is short and the people with whom he came into contact with are self-isolating at home for 14 days.

The man stayed at home after returning from China and no details were given about how many others might live in the same household as the patient.

I'm not changing my habits too much, but definitely not eating out at Asian restaurants. I drove by my favorite Chinese place, its usually loaded with customers for Saturday lunch, and there were perhaps three cars on the parking lot.

NYC and Massachusetts have now had confirmed cases of coronavirus as well.

Are you joking? Not eating out at Asian restaurants will probably do nothing in keeping you safe.

What else can I do? Silicon valley is a major destination for travel to and from Asia. I'm using hand sanitizer, avoiding the airports. If there was more than one confirmed case here I might worry.

I've got a divey but tasty-as-hell dim sum place I like in my city's Chinatown. One of those places that caters to the local Chinese & Chinese-Americans, with little English spoken by the staff and only a limited number of English-speaking patrons. In essence, the kind of ethnic place I like!

But now my wife is getting cold feet about going. Seeing as we've got a Chinese-American couple from my city already hospitalized with the virus, I guess I can see my wife's concerns.

The trick lies actually in not going for a meal with THEM.

With that likelihood removed by their hospitalization, I wouldn't worry, were I you.

Well, apparently my wife's not the only one concerned. Earlier today when she voiced her concerns to me, she told me as it was announced in the local news that the New Year's celebration at our most predominate Chinatown had been called off for today - but one of the other Asian communities (Little Saigon) was still holding their parade & festivities.

I'm not prone to belittle the whole thing, yet I'd worry more about the flu infections we all (both sides of the pond and beyond) encounter each year. If, that is, I would tend to worry anyway.

More people died from that one than have so far died of corona but also, like with corona, most of those infected don't.

But yeah, who wants to spend two weeks in quarantine just for not being able to go without Ham Sui Gok for a bit of time?

Well, at least you can still get a coronavirus-free kabob from any of the middle eastern places:shock:

I agree with the general flu concerns, which is why healthcare professionals in my city are required to get flu shots. It's not my thing, but everyone else in my family gets them - even those not working in healthcare.

My wife has higher credentials to make these judgements than I, so with health matters I generally defer to her. She wants to give it a month or so to play out, so I think that may not be a bad idea. It's not like we're making any substantive changes in our lives - we're not.

There ya' go. Hang "Coronavirus Free" right next to the "Halaal" sign!
