Federal judge seizes control of Rikers Island from NYC
A federal judge in New York has taken the extraordinary step of seizing control of the city’s troubled Rikers Island jail stating that it remained unconstitutionally dangerous for inmates.
Second link is the the Opinion of the Court in Nunez v NYC. Chief United States District Judge Laura Taylor Swain of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York is presiding over this case.
NYC has already been found in contempt and it was inevitable that the court was going to get fed up and seize control of the jails. Riker's Island and the remaining jails will now be run by an official appointed by the court and who will answer only to the court.
Unfortunate when a court must do this, but Riker's Island is a literal hell hole and NYC has abundantly shown that it neither can nor is inclined to fix the problem, thus the Federal Courts must do so.
