Favorite school lunches : A nostalgia thread

All of the school lunch discussion got me thinking about school lunches that I liked. Here are the ones that stand out for me :

Chili and corn bread
Chicken and noodles
Pizza, but not the variety that you're probably thinking of. This one had a really thick crust that was so good that we sometimes took the cheese off.
7th grade a la carte hamburgers and brain freeze chocolate milkshakes that were the consistency of a Frosty. We couldn't believe our luck.


What were your favorites? As a special food subforum request, let's leave political bickering out of this one, thanks. It's mostly supposed to be fun.
 
I remember in grammar school I liked the tuna salad sandwiches. It came with carrot sticks and I'd put them in the sandwich for crunch. It was good.

In high school I had a pretzel and an orange drink for lunch every day. Every single day.

In college there was every imaginable food.
 
Being a 60s kid I remember the 30c school lunch and the 5c milk. We had Deep dish Pizza, mashed potatoes and gravy, lasagna. There's more but I don't remember. I liked them all.
 
I mostly stuck with the little rectangular pizzas. They weren't bad at all. Sometimes a burger and crinkle cut fries.

Can't even remember what else they used to serve that I may have eaten. Been a long time.

Few years back, I had grabbed a pack of those type pizzas from a bulk 'food service' place around here. We're terrible.
Not like I remembered, or maybe back then I didn't really care.
 
No favorite. HS was probably the least worst, though the sandwiches were way too small (if you got them). Curly fries weren't so bad.

Middle school served this pizza that used some kind of partly imitation cheese. After lots of chewing, you'd end up with a hard little ball of gum-like material. Or the chicken patties with bits of gristle/etc throughout.
 
In Canada we have no such thing as school lunches. We brought our own packed lunch which in my house was sandwiches, cookies, a cupcake or tart and a piece of fruit. We could buy milk . My favourite sandwich was egg salad or bologna.
 

Hunger is the best seasoning.
 
The square pizza you thought about that wasn't Helix's pizza, and anything with tater tots. The only other memorable hot lunch was Thanksgiving, where they had mashed potatoes and turkey gravy.

Ashes was that in Canada? In Ontario we have never had school lunches. I think some high schools may have had cafeterias but they were outsourced.

That was in elementary and middle school. In high school we had premade subs as an option, as well as donuts, milk boxes and real pizza. More expensive though and I usually went somewhere else to get lunch, like a nearby grocery deli for Chinese.

No that was in Washington state, in the 90s.
 
In high school - soft pretzel and spicy mustard from the a la carte line.

Pretty sure I ate that almost daily.

Tater tots in the younger grades.

(I have always been a relatively picky eater, can’t say much about school lunches because I rarely ate much at school.)

Tater tots, for sure. In the past few years, I've craved them again.
 
Our school chef in grade school, this was in the mid 60s, was a sweet old Italian lady and she made a great lasagna.
We got it once a month and everyone looked forward to that day at school.

I did that for years as well. PB&J with apple slices and crisps was good. Sometimes it was bologna. I had some cool lunch boxes.

I was one of six and the eldest. I was responsible for making the lunches. I hated the job but I got out of doing dishes which I hated more given the size of our family and no such thing as a dishwasher. Plus my Mom always prepared a big dinner so there were tons of dishes.
 
The lousy pizza was the biggest hit at my elementary school.

I remember it as cardboard soaked in grease and painted with tempera.
