What are your favorite movie songs? Here’s my top 25. (Note: I’m only listing songs that were written specifically for the movies for which they appeared in, not pre-existing songs that were used in movies. However, I’m making an exception to this rule for songs that were written for musicals that were turned into movies.)

What an awesome list! I 100% agree! 🤗

There's always this:

The best song from a movie - as in, created for, shown in the movie and a significant plot point - is "That Thing You Do," by Adam Schlesinger, from That Thing You Do.

Or maybe "Stonehenge," by Spinal Tap, from This is Spinal Tap.

The best song that was a "theme song" to a movie is "Suicide is Painless," by Michael Altman and Johnny Mandel, from M*A*S*H (the movie, not the TV Show).

The best song in a movie is "East Hastings," by Godspeed You! Black Emperor, from 28 Days Later.

Come at me, bro.

or the earlier:

Okay, this was not written for the movie but its still a favorite from the Seven Year Itch:

West Side Story:

And one of the most frightening songs written for Cabaret:

Wow, that's got to be the first time you've ever agreed with me on anything on this forum!:)

I’m curious, what are all the types of music that you like. Here are mine:
Film music & Broadway musicals
Classical
Rock’n’roll
New Age
Jazz
Traditional American music

Those are the main preferred genres, but I also like a few songs in the genres of heavy metal, country, and rap.

For me a definite difference here.
Are you talking movies that used already existing songs for their movie OR songs that were specifically written for a movie.
Old Hollywood seemed to create many original songs for their movies, and many became hits from the movie, now they seem to just reuse existing music.

For me top original movie songs you have to consider would be the Star Wars theme or the Indiana Jones theme or probably the original score of 2001: A Space Odyssey. And I am sure there are others.

I was referring to songs with lyrics that were written specifically for the movies in which they appeared OR were written for Broadway musicals that were turned into movies.

OK
Thanks for the clarification.

I'm a basic classic rock' n' roller; the 70's through the 90's mostly, but I had 10 years of piano lessons (my parents decided I would be a concert pianist, I had different plans) so classical will always be a fav. I memorized Beethovens Pathetique for my last recital, and I also love jazz and all of the music you listed as your favs. I was deeply touched by you listing "Feed the Birds" as a fav, that hauntingly beautiful song is one of my absolute favorites of all time, and "The Way We Were" still brings tears to my eyes. I just found your choices remarkably similar to the songs I love too. I like some heavy metal, some new age, and some country like Willy Nelson, CCR, Charlie Daniels. Rap and hip hop, not so much, but I'm sure a lot of that is age related. I look at my 20 something grandgirls with raised eyebrows when I hear some of the stuff they listen to!

The whole daggone album is great...

As is the entire soundtrack of Saturday Night Fever! So sad there's only one BeeGee left.....

I can't see titles for many of the OP's list, but one I was/am fond of is the Glenn Fry music for "Beverly Hills Cop" 'The Heat Is On'.

BUT there are a whole bunch of cool choices listed above this post.

I grew up with music all the time because my pa was a really good music guy. He graduated from that special music school in NYC and if the Second World War had not come along he'd have made it big. As it was, he played for a short time with that Tommy Dorsey Band (not sure that spelling is right).

Anyway, my pa was always creating bands at the bases where he was stationed when he went into the Air Force because of my natural ma's cancer. At that time the military was the best for that sort of medical help, if you weren't really rich.

But my pa couldn't make the transition to rock-and-roll and my step ma was really not into that rock-and-roll. I picked it up pretty heavy after I got drafted and was hearing it all the time on Armed Forces Radio. Also got into that disco stuff rather heavy when off duty. Disco was a big-big deal in the 70s. Didn't have to learn that fancy ballroom dancing stuff. That sort of dancing is very difficult.

Uh oh, went over 100 words again, didn't I.

I’m crazy about rock’n’roll. What are your absolute favorite rock’n’roll songs? Here’s my top ten:
1.“Freebird”
2.Imagine
3.“Paradise City”
4.“Won’t Get Fooled Again”
5.“When the Levee Breaks”
6.“Paint It Black”
7.“Cotton Fields”
8.“People Are Strange”
9.“We Gotta Get Out of This Place”
10.“For What It’s Worth”

I also played piano for around that same amount of time. I memorized Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.” IMO, Beethoven is the greatest composer who ever lived, and the Ninth Symphony, especially the last movement with the “Ode to Joy”, is my all-time favorite musical piece from ANY genre.
I also love jazz
I love jazz, ragtime, and swing. Also, as a former piano player, I’m crazy about piano jazz. When I was younger, I memorized George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue (my all-time fave jazz piece) for solo piano. Who are your favorite composers in this broader genre? Here’s my top 10:
1.George Gershwin
2.Jelly Roll Morton
3.James Price Johnson
4.Scott Joplin
5.Cole Porter
6.Duke Ellington
7.Vince Guaraldi
8.Willam “The Lion” Smith
9.Eubie Blake
10.Joseph Lamb

Wanna hear something funny? I wasn’t sure whether to include that song because I thought somebody would ridicule me for it. But I went with my heart. Btw, you talk about being deeply touched. I’m always touched when I hear “Tomorrow” from Orphan Annie because of a cherished memory from my childhood.
and "The Way We Were" still brings tears to my eyes.
I don’t care for Barbra Streisand’s politics, but I love her singing, acting, and directing. The Way We Were is one of her best, and the movie is pretty good, too.

Given our vehement differences on political issues, it’s nice to agree on something we both love. I live for music. Always have.
Btw, who do you like in New Age? I love Vangelis, Kitaro, and Enya.
