Canada recorded amazing export and import growth in Q1 which contributed to GDP growth for the quarter of 0.4%.

Total exports rose 6.0% in the first quarter of 2025 to reach a record high of $214.0 billion. This follows a strong increase of 4.6% observed in the last quarter of 2024. Exports of energy products (+7.5%) and motor vehicles and parts (+13.2%) were the largest contributors to the growth in the first quarter of 2025.

Meanwhile, quarterly imports increased 5.2% to a record $212.8 billion in the first quarter.

Like many countries we were able to grow our economy without triggering a world wide trade war.

Today we have the world's top economist at the helm so I expect to see good things going forward.

Allan, what is this hackery?? Trump has his boot on our throats, we're moments from caving and becoming the 51st state, we simply cannot live without them!!!!!!

Please, no more fake news. Trump says we're ****ed (not to mention some Canada obsessed DP members), so we're ****ed, end of story.

We're really poking a hole in the "they can't live without us" narrative.

Nah, Trump did that almost immediately. ;)

Stuff like this makes the narrative irrelevant, I can't be arsed to raise a finger to poke the hole anymore. Let them hold onto it for a long as possible, we only stand to benefit more the longer they do.

I suspect a lot of that was in anticipation of the tariffs. I trust Carney to get us through this but there will be pain in upcoming quarters.

I disagree. Humour is relevant in that it improves the forum experience for all of us.

Rumours of Canada's death are greatly exaggerated. (Apologies to Mark Twain).

Lol... fair enough, you enjoy the snacks, I'm saving my appetite for the main course. :)

We'll see. It's possible that reduced trade with the US will give other countries a larger slice of the pie.

Oh I agree that we likely will enjoy an expansion of our markets as we reduce our dependency on the US but it will take some time.

They're may be pain, but this boon was thanks to Trump's incompetence. It's not like he's going to stop being incompetent, so I'm sure opportunities to monetize that incompetence will continue to present, and we have just the guy to capitalize on them.

Canada has always been a stick and move country. We will take some punches, sure, but we usually come out ahead, and given the variables in play now, well... I see no reason to anticipate any other outcome.

Funnily enough even with all the headaches south of the border I am feeling more confident in our economic success moving forward than in a long time. Carney's laser focus on the economy, his experience and his determination to lessen our dependency on the US while strengthening the relationship of two sovereign nations is a breath of fresh air.

Yeah, everything else aside, it's great to have a leader that is not obsessed with social issues and is focussing on the business side of running the country.

Don't get me wrong, I think social issues are also important, especially in the face of a conservative social movement that takes aim at so many... but this aspect of governance has been neglected for far too long... all four tires are important to keep the car moving.

Imagine what could be accomplished if we didn't have this pain in the ass south of the border making literally everything about him. If anything, Carney's second term will be far more interesting than his first, if I had to guess, so long as he lives up to his resume and our expectations.

In some regards putting priorities on social issues is a bit of window dressing.

We have a well written Charter. Let's move on to more pressing tasks.
