(Reuters) - The storming of the U.S. Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump on Wednesday has prompted calls by some Congressional Democrats to remove him from office before President-elect Joe Biden is sworn in on Jan. 20.

The chaotic scenes here unfolded after Republican Trump, who has refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power, addressed thousands of protesters and repeated unfounded claims that the election was stolen from him.

There are two ways to remove a president from office: impeachment and the 25th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. In either scenario, Vice President Mike Pence would take over until Biden’s inauguration.

Can Trump be impeached and removed?

Yes. He is mentally unfit to lead this country as shown by his actions today.

I remember democrats excusing political violence for months when it was over a scumbag who OD’d on Fentanyl

And when Tom Cotton said to bring the tanks he was called all kinds of terrible names and had his op-ed depublished. Now Suddenly mostly peaceful protest is wrong?

Well, there's one other way.

Yes, he could be. He should be. Will he be? Unlikely.

Mostly peaceful? A woman was shot & killed.

I don't think it will happen, but I think our nation would be better off with President Mike Pence as the 46th president right now. Donald Trump has given up any pretense of being interested in dealing with COVID, health care, infrastructure, foreign relations, economy, national security etc... his only priority is staying in the White House or burning down as much of the system as he can and inflicting maximum harm on anyone he deems disloyal. He is not putting energy into anything else. We don't need 1 more day of that, much less 14. Elevate Pence, stabilize the next two weeks, with maximum focus on getting the vaccine distributed and used as widely as possible. Heck, create a cabinet position for Pence to stay on to support it past the 20th if it helps create some unity.

Donald, Eric, Ivanka and Donald Jr. will be just fine.

The nation needs to decide if it is loyal to the Republican Party, its principles, policy platforms and interests... or if it's loyal to the Trump Family, their casinos, hotels and their individual and business interests. Ditching Trump and his divisiveness does not mean giving up in conservative principles and policies. But people who cannot separate their political identify from the Trump family need to acknowledge that they're no longer conservatives; they are adherents to a new political party whose primary interest is in establishing a Trump-led dynasty.

He should be impeached, removed and barred from holding office in the US ever again. Just to be sure.
