Ireland and the UK have been exempt from the current European travel ban. Even though a lot of EU countries like Lithuania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Latvia, North Macedonia, Malta, Hungary, Slovakia, Albania and Serbia have less than half the corona patients that Ireland has and the UK has 14 times higher corona sufferers. In fact a whole host of EU or European countries have figures way less than the UK (798 with 208 new patients and 11 deaths).

So why do you think Trump did this? Speculate as wildly as you want too ;)

No speculation needed. The World Health Organization has declared that the Schengen Area, having the second worst outbreak next to China and basically uncontrolled community infections, should be avoided. This is a case of the Trump administration actually listening to experts.

And the UK is better than Schengen countries :lamo

Also, any EU citizen can travel at will to Ireland and the UK. So it really is not a safer option than Schengen countries. Now if Trump had said Italy/Spain/France/Germany/Netherlands/UK/Switzerland I would have been fine with it. The virus there is running wild, but then again, so is the US. And if a person comes from any Schengen country as a US citizen, they will be able to fly out no problem.

Nope, these 2 countries were exempted because he does not want to loose income from his golf courses. Because Boris Johnson said that the 800 corona cases was just a small part of the number who are actually infected with corona. The UK government said (when the official figure was at just shy of 600, that the actual number of cases (due to failure to test) was somewhere between 5 and 10 thousand. And that was 200 patients ago.

Spin it like you want, Schengen countries can travel freely to the UK and Ireland and thus would not prevent further infections in the US.

Especially not when there are plenty of US outbreaks.

Not to want to sound to drastic, but we should do what the Chinese did. Every place you go you get tested with a thermometer and when found to have fever you go to be tested/scanned and isolated from society. Best place to do that is army bases, just add tents, rent hotels, and lock people in until you know they are not infected by corona and protect their families from being infected. Harsh measures are needed.

Having read the actual travel ban, this is exactly what happens... anyone having traveled to these countries in the past 14 days are also banned (excepting US citizens, and some other persons such as diplomats, etc.)

I'd disagree with quarantining everyone with a fever, but that's a separate point.

Europeans trying to get around the travel ban to the US will be jailed if they try to fly in using the UK route.

Then again, this is because Europe has been very much disrespectful to our beloved president. The UK is exempt because Boris is a nice guy. ;)

Perhaps they have higher literacy rates, or more people who now what the "Schengen Area" is.

Though it's probably the border controls (see Schengen Area).

Yes, poor Trump; must be missing his blankie. All joking aside I don't understand why Britain was exempt. Seems eminently sensible to include us in the travel ban.
