"BASEL, Switzerland — Fans from around the world have descended upon the 69th Eurovision Song Contest to rally behind performers from their home countries who have been battling it out onstage all week."

Eurovision 2025 has kicked off in Basel, Switzerland. Artists from throughout Europe have been performing all week, hoping to post a win for the nation they represent. Finalists will put on their last acts on Saturday, when people throughout the continent are expected to watch and vote for their favorite. Celine Dion, the winner of Eurovision 1988, is expected to make a surprise visit. Could there be any other event on the continent, besides the World Cup, that brings people together all at one time?

Shouldn't winning be about the best performance?

I don't follow Eurovision but if it's just about being nice to Israel or anyone - why not just have a competition for 2nd place and have prestige for 2nd place. Just let Israel win however good or bad their entry is.

I get that but I'm just wondering as I saw other comments like this on another Eurovision thread - just wondering why a nationality is more important than the quality of the offered music.

Angry antisemitic rants about Eurovision not banning the evil evil Jews is the very definition of pathetic. Not a huge fan of Eurovision but Israel should keep showing up on that stage and any other world stage if only just to anger its haters, it's totally worth it.
 
Meh, I knew Bara bada bastu wouldn't win, even though Swedish and Finnish media hyped it up as the best thing since Tuesday. I really like KAJ though, but the juries would never vote for them.

Eurovision should just end.

Australia should not be eligible for the Eurovision, full stop. And when it was a purely popular vote nations voting for regional favourites was always a thing, now they just give nul points to the two odd bods of Europe, the UK and Switzerland.

I listened to the UK entry yesterday, impressive it took six people to come up with a song whose title 'what the hell just happened?' prefigured the reaction of the listener.

Heh. Footie, too. Like, I don't have a problem with Maccabi Tel Aviv, but it's always weird to see them head to head with PAOK or O. Marseille. Because, y'know, not in Europe. It would be like a team from Suriname playing in the African Cup of Nations.

You don't have to be European to participate. As long as the country is a member of the European Broadcasting Union, they are eligible.

The shitty little client state part was the point of my comment. As a wholly owned subsidiary of the American weapons testing program, it really should be treated as a North American entity...
 
No one is saying banning Jews...you sound very Zionist talking point on your part..

But banning countries that start wars and/or are committing genocide yes...we did it with Russia, Yugoslavia and others, so why not Israel?
