Eugene Cernan, last man on the moon, dies - CNN.com

Eugene A. Cernan, the last astronaut to leave his footprints on the surface of the moon, has died, NASA said Monday.
He was 82.
"We are saddened by the loss of retired NASA astronaut Gene Cernan, the last man to walk on the moon," the US space agency said on Twitter.
The end and last one of an era. RIP

Not sure what your last sentence intends to say. There are still 6 living Apollo astronauts who have walked on the moon. Cernan was the last one to do so on Apollo 17.
Was he not the last one to land on the moon?
That was my point

I think every man who ever went to the moon, even just circled the moon, is going to be dead before a single person gets to Mars.

This is incredibly sad, it is a failure to achieve something that was very worth doing.

We could have done it.

The former I was not aware of, but it was the end of an era. I remember growing up and watching the launches on TV. Today it seems commonplace and we have perhaps lost our wonder of what it takes, man, machines, to accomplish such a feat

He was next to last to land, as I recall, but definitely the last man on the moon.

...or, goes back to the moon,

I was not aware that others were still alive. Still the end of an era

Respect for the passing of another great legend of the Apollo era.

We should redouble our efforts to get out into space, to honor him.

I had totally forgotten that they had great difficulty getting off the surface of the Moon, which was due to them placing a switch in the wrong position.
