BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union has warned the United States that imposing import tariffs on cars and car parts would harm its own automotive industry and likely lead to counter-measures by its trading partners on $294 billion of U.S. exports.

As we continue to spiral down into a meaningless & counterproductive trade war.

No way. Trump has Canada and Europe quaking in their boots because the world needs us more than we need the world. Sure, things here will get more expensive for a little bit, but we can take it. By "we" I mean the rich, because obviously the poor and even a good hunk of the middle class can't really "take it" in a system where real purchasing power hasn't risen in decades. But hey, why should we nitpick, when we can instead just overlook any troublesome parts that may demonstrate how this will end up hurting the American people. Economy is great man, that means that we can "take it". So don't worry. Soon Canada and Europe will come running to us for our good and then we'll be able to pick the terms of our trade agreements, and when that happens...bam! Everything will be better. I mean, yes, mostly that means that rich people will just be getting richer, there's no evidence or indication that this will make it down to real, statistically significant increases in things such as wages or benefits. But again...nitpicking.

Trump is going to make us stronger, richer, better looking than ever before. All you naysayers, with your "logic" and your "reason" and "observation of the system and variables involved" just hate Trump because he's going to do what's necessary to fix the problems caused by the status quo and the swamp.

It's time to remove the ability of a president to unilaterally start a trade war.

I've observed an overarching theme of "it's going to hurt us less than it's going to hurt them" with all this.

That's their narrative. That we'll be able to "take it", even though that means that many people won't survive it. They think that all this will cause enough damage to our "enemies" (which is now apparently Canada and Europe) that they'll break down before we really f' ourselves up.

Of course where does this really end up getting us? Just rich people getting richer. Even if all this works out, sure it will be great for certain Corporations and CEO's salaries, but I'm not sure much will "trickle down".

Yes, it is time. Like immediately. But will the GOP have the balls to do it?

Problem is many Trump supporters, people who could actually be hurt by this, think this is all fantastic.

By congress taking such a step, they’re attacking the dear leader and so some of the base will not be pleased and besides, when this does end up hurting them they can simply blame the rest of the world and immigrants for it.

I saw someone last week say something like:

“Tariffs affect other economies, not ours”.

Literally like how delusional can a person get to believe that?

And Democrats. Oh, and Hillary and Obama. It's very important to blame them as well.

Just gotta be some hyperpartisan true believer. We got lots of them, on both sides. Though currently the Trumpeteers are taking it to a whole new level.

Total crock.

Sales of Cadillacs in Europe from 2015 to 2017 = 2161
Sales of BMW's in the USA from 2015 to 2017 = 964,882

Who is screwing who here?

You can compare all you need to compare to come up with valid comparisons in stead of this "vapor" argument.
How would you feel if you were an autoworker in the USA?

My biggest question is why we even want to "hurt" them to begin with. I don't see how holding a trade war against our own allies is supposed to be productive.

My suggestion to the EU: Less talk...more action.

In other words, spare the rhetoric. Take your best shot.

We'll see who squeals first.

It's not productive in the least. It's some spin on the narrative of Make America Great Again. I'm not sure how possibly stalling out the economy makes us great again, but apparently the narrative is that we were getting a raw deal on our trade agreements, and Trump is going to fix that.

I'm not sure it's an intelligent move. Though I have to say, there isn't much Trump does and the Trumpeteers cheer that could be called "intelligent".

You'd rather own a Cadillac than a BMW?

You'd rather own a Cadillac than a BMW?

Hell yes. It's a better car. It's not your daddy's Caddy any more.

But that is not the point. The point is our market is wide open to foreign imports and theirs is not.

That link is useful to those who GAF about facts regarding trade barriers.

May I suggest some additional reading to my Libertarian friend?

Libertarian Party on Free Trade

Prosperity will come from unrestricted free markets
In order to achieve a free economy, we oppose all government subsidies to business, labor, education, agriculture, science, broadcasting, the arts, sports, or any other special interest. In particular, we condemn any effort to forge an alliance between government and business under the guise of “industrial policy.”

Our trade partners are treating us like their bitches.

Please provide cites for the swamp draining. So far his appointments are typical political payoffs, same old swamp. But hey, you keep cutting and pasting those Trump bumper stickers.

If you're going to Make An Omelet Great Again, you're going to have to break some eggs.

So, we want them to import more cars from Canada?

also, how does one win a fight against every major trading partner we have?

same way you win a fight against all of the retailers in town and online. You declare that those retailers have been cheating you, then proceed to manufacture everything you need yourself. Go off grid and be independent!
