Russia complained these tougher sanctions are "anti Russian".

Well duh.

The Council adopted the 18th package of sanctions against Russia, which includes restrictions on the energy, banking and military sectors.

The EU is seeking to limit Russia’s energy revenues through a range of measures, including lowering the price ceiling for crude oil from 60 to 47.6 dollars per barrel to align it with current global oil prices, and introducing an automatic and dynamic mechanism to adjust the price ceiling and ensure its effectiveness, as oil exports continue to account for one-third of the Russian government’s revenues.

A further 105 vessels belonging to the shadow fleet will be subject to a port access ban and a ban on the provision of maritime transport services, bringing the total number of vessels on the list to 444.

I think this is a good idea. Russia has been skirting sanctions for a very long time. It's about time they were held COMPLETELY and TOTALLY accountable for their behavior.

Russia can go broke and stay broke until Putin is out of office and Russian troops are out of Ukraine.

It was shut down three years ago. Hasn't been in use since summer of 2022, when Russia shut Nordstream 1 after Germany confirmed they would not move forward with using Nordstream 2.

All of the sanctions they added are new.

If I had my way, every ship in the "shadow fleet" would be sunk.
Yes, new sanctions including more Russian banks, closing the India- Turkey loophole as well as sanctions against Chinese and Hong Kong companies that helped bypass previous sanctions.

These comprehensive EU sanctions against everything Nordstream is a deserved kick in the crotch to Trump and the slick American investor Stephen Lynch who has long time business relationships in Russia.

Lynch is the front man of a still anonymous group of US investors who are interested in buying two of the four Nordstream Serpent pipelines, repairing the exploded one for $667million and resuming the flow of "cheap" Russian gas to Europe via its ready landfall in Germany. Both lines would be NS 2.

This interest which emerged last year gained new momentum after Trump won -- and when Trump thought he was going to bamboozle the warmonger barbarian KGB Putin into a peace with Ukraine. And that Trump and Putin would make a deal on the two repaired NS 2 lines whereby the US would buy Russian gas to sell to Europe and collect the revenues. The EU just said FU to this mad scheme that anyway is a long stretch from realities.

Lynch met in Germany in May with government regulatory and energy officials who blew him off completely. The new conservative Chancellor Fredrick Merz has been clear that, and to paraphrase but get exactly his view, over his dead body would NordStream become active again. Indeed, Germany is still recovering from the disastrous and catastrophic Putin-Merkel BFF Axis of Geostrategic Energy against Europe that produced the pipelines beginning in 2006 when the former East German DDR Merkel took office for the first time.

* * *

And now with Putin in Trump's dog house over Putin's unrelenting war in Ukraine there isn't much chance anyway that the still unknown US investors could make a Devils Deal with both the EU led in these thorough sanctions by Germany, and with Russian Gazprom. Plus Putin has lost his Nordstream 2 Champion Matthias Warnig the former East German Stasi who ran the project construction and delivery for Gazprom. Warnig turned against Putin over Ukraine, calling the war "an indescribable mistake" and resigned from everything Nordstream.

NS 1 & 2 cleared bankruptcy at the end of June on its original filing after the sabotage explosions in September 2022. The EU NS sanctions are activated now because the bankruptcy interim manager Translig AG says it's possible two lines can reopen in 2030 for 50 years. One line of NS 2 was not exploded and the second of two lines of NS 2 has been plugged to preserve its inside technology.
