Erdogan: US scrapping F-35 jet deal with Turkey would be robbery

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has said it would be "robbery" for the United States to deny Turkey the F-35 fighter jets it has bought, according to remarks published in Turkish media.

"If you have a customer and that customer is making payments like clockwork, how can you not give that customer their goods? The name of that would be robbery," the national Hurriyet newspaper quoted Erdogan as saying on Thursday, as Turkey faces potential US sanctions over its purchase of the Russian S-400 missile system.

He said that Turkey had so far paid $1.4bn for the F-35s and that four jets had been handed over, with Turkish pilots going to the US for training.

"We have made an agreement to buy 116 F-35s. We are not just a market, we are also joint producers. We produce some of the parts in Turkey," he added.

COMMENT:-

It most certainly would be "theft" if the US government kept the Turkish government's money and didn't deliver the aircraft that had been contracted for - wouldn't it?

This, of course, would be totally different than the US government keeping the Iranian government's money and not delivering the weapons that had been contracted for - right?

Of course, Mr. Trump could simply tell the Secretary of the Treasury to cut Turkey a check for the full amount due and then hand it over to the Turkish ambassador. Mind you, if that option isn't available, Mr. Trump could cut a personal check and then submit it for reimbursement along with his next expense account statement - well, he COULD.

PS - It appears that the US government doesn't have a whole lot of time to make up its mind because it seems that "Turkey's S-400s to be loaded on planes Sunday in Russia: Haberturk".

Just give them back their money and keep the jets.

It would be theft. We should honor the agreement, or refund the money. Of course, I would hope they would transfer the money through a bank, rather than sending it in bundles of cash on an airplane in the middle of the night.

That may be what Turkey wants, given the issues with the F-35 program, and it's escalating costs. It's what I'd advise them to do. They could buy twice the number of aircraft from Russia, and still have money left over.

You mean like Mr. Obama did with the Iranian money that the US government had received in return for weapons that the US government had not delivered and was never going to deliver?

Or are you suggesting that it happen somewhat sooner?

Picky, picky, picky.

PS - It would be rather difficult to transfer the money through a bank since any bank (American or foreign) that transfers money to Iran is subject to punitive sanctions for breaching American law.

I'm sure there are arrangements that could have been made, including getting approval from congress for a one time transfer.

those Russian aircraft would not come with kill switch installed unlike the American ones .... it's America's insurance programme should they go to war with a country they sold military hardware to

America sanctions Turkey ... Turkey may respond by quitting NATO and tell NATO forces to leave Turkish soil .... Turkey is very unpredictable

Turkish citizens don't think all that much of Russians. "American's without money or deodorant."

"Approval from congress" wins the award for the funniest phrase of the week.

How so? You don't think congress would have approved of transferring the money? I wonder why?

I'm sure it's to our advantage to having Turkey use US fighters. I'm just not sure it's to Turkey's advantage.

I say use the money to build a bunch of bombs and return them on F-35s to Turkey via air drop on strategic locations.

What "strategic locations" do you have in mind?

I would expect just a ban on US air planes using Turkish airspace.

Ask Ukraine about being Russia's buddy.

Ukraine could not afford to operate and maintain the F35. Let alone purchase them

I realized that was vague and edited. It's about trying to be Russia's buddy or expecting them to be an ally.

Turkey will join the new Iron Curtain from north Africa to Syria.

Just give them back their money and keep the jets.

Yup.

Attach cutting-edge fifth generation NATO aerial superiority technology to a system on which the Russians have been allowed to upload whatever software they like?

No thanks.

I am not certain that giving our tech to the Russians via the Turks is all that much to our advantage.

Well when being a buddy one should not actively go against the interests of said buddy. Or the biddy will not be a buddy for long.

Ukraine was trying to stop being Russia's buddy, the US has actively gone against Turkish interests and security concerns. Russia and Turkey will never be allies just share strategic intersts at times

Given the opportunity, Russia would be happy to make Turkey a satellite state.

They already got it off Hillary's server.
