East Asian FTA in the cards?

Driving more trade to centre around China is a predictable outcome of Trumps tariffs. As more and more countries 'de-Americanize' their trade, the likely biggest long term winner is China. It's not just about the tariffs either. It is about America becoming an unpredictable, and unreliable partner consumed by self interests.

Exactly that, coupled with making decisions based on fantasy, rather than sound economic facts.

China, Japan and South Korea to strengthen free trade

The East Asian economies seems set to weaken the impact of Trump tariffs by increasing trade with each other, and lessening trade barriers between them. If this happens it'd be a huge regional victory for China.
Reading the article, it's not clear to me how this will "weaken the impact of Trump's tariffs".

What was decided in the meeting?

The countries' three trade ministers agreed to "closely cooperate for a comprehensive and high-level" talks on a South Korea-Japan-China free trade agreement deal to promote "regional and global trade," according to a statement released after the meeting.

"It is necessary to strengthen the implementation of RCEP, in which all three countries have participated, and to create a framework for expanding trade cooperation among the three countries through Korea-China-Japan FTA negotiations," said South Korean Trade Minister Ahn Duk-geun, referring to the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership.

Sure, this meeting will help RCEP, but all three countries are heavily dependent upon the US consumer base. Increasing trade amongst themselves will not compensate for the reductions they face if they don't cooperate with Trump.

If they start removing trade barriers it will mean they will buy more from each other and less from the US. And they will sell more to each other and less to the US.
