E.P.A. Plans to Shut Down the Energy Star Program

The Environmental Protection Agency plans to eliminate Energy Star, the popular energy efficiency certification for dishwashers, refrigerators, dryers and other home appliances, according to agency documents and a recording of an internal meeting.

E.P.A. managers announced during a staff meeting on Monday that divisions that oversee climate change and energy efficiency would be eliminated as part of an agency reorganization. That includes the E.P.A.’s climate change office as well as the division that oversees Energy Star.

“The Energy Star program and all the other climate work, outside of what’s required by statute, is being de-prioritized and eliminated,” Paul Gunning, the director of the E.P.A. Office of Atmospheric Protection, told employees during the meeting, according to the recording obtained by The New York Times. Mr. Gunning’s office itself is also slated for elimination.

Sure, eliminate the office that helps consumers pick the most efficient appliances that will same them energy costs. I’m sure the Energy Star program cost very little to run.

I feel like the Clean Air Act is fairly clear about the priority level of Mr. Gunning's office.

I'm starting to think that Trump supporters only like to read headlines and little more, and they should count themselves lucky, because Trump only likes to create headlines and little more.

So, due to ensuing headlines, now we know that Trump sat through that Alcatraz movie this weekend, and we also know that one of the commercials on repeat mentioned the Energy Star as one of its selling points.

Don't you think companies have a natural incentive to promote the efficiency of their products?

Well that does make it easier for domestic factories built on a shoestring - in response to a fabricated void - to compete with better built foreign appliances when they do not have to fret over adhering to those pesky metrics

If so, then they have an incentive to lie about their efficiency. An independent, nonindustry funded reliable source for the information would be useful for consumers.

But, usefulness for consumers is something we apparently can’t have because billionaires need tax cuts.

Several car manufacturers have been caught lying about their vehicles' emissions, primarily through the use of "defeat devices" that allow them to bypass emissions tests during laboratory conditions but not in real-world driving. Volkswagen's diesel emissions scandal is a prominent example, where the company was found to have installed software that manipulated emissions test results. Other manufacturers have also been implicated, including BMW, Daimler, and Toyota

because companies never lie! lol

Another genius move by Trump, probably. Is there no end to the man's stupidity?

For how many decades did Big Tobacco lie about their smoking research?

You can't trust corporations to be honest when profits are their measuring stick.

Trump is obsessed with low flow toilets and shower heads. He’s complained about toilets that need to be flushed 20 times.

I have a low flow toilet and flushing it once works fine for me.

In this case I’ll take Trump at his word, he needs to flush his 20 times. Imagine…

Maybe the government shouldn’t test new drugs and just take the word of the drug companies? What could possibly go wrong?

It was really helpful having a uniform measuring system and uniform testing of appliances by the government.

How do you know how efficient the product is? The energy star program required consistent labeling that showed the average energy usage of an appliance.

Nope. They were forced to do so because buyers wanted that. Without buyers seeking more efficient appliances, the companies wouldn't do anything.
