A Valentine's Day weekend sleepover of 12- and 13-year-old girls in the Oklahoma City area took a turn for the worse when Democratic House candidate Abby Broyles got drunk and verbally berated several of them, parents say.
Broyles is the likely Democratic nominee in reconfigured Oklahoma's 5th Congressional District, covering part of Oklahoma City, the state's capital and largest population center. Broyles, an attorney and former local television news anchor, faces an uphill battle against first-term GOP Rep. Stephanie Bice as the new lines during the redistricting process shed heavily Democratic parts of Oklahoma City.
Multiple accounts corroborated that Broyles became intoxicated and verbally disparaged some of the girls in attendance, saying she called one girl an "acne f*****," another girl a "Hispanic f*****," and a third girl a "judgy f*****,"
Broyles at first denied the allegations altogether and said she was not at the home that evening and was out of town. But Broyles changed her story in the KFOR interview.
...blaming it on alcohol consumption in combination with medication she had "never taken before."
She apologized to the families but underscored she was "not in her right mind" due to a combination of substances.
"I would never, ever, say something hurtful like those things," Broyles added.
Oklahoma is another example of how re-dictricting sucks when it's done by a majority party in a state:
OK has 5 congressional seats and the state usually votes ca. 65% Republican and 35% Democratic in statewide elections (President, Governor, Senate).
Until 2020, the 5th district was roughly even with Rs holding it until 2018 when Kendra Horn won it. In 2020, Republican Stephanie Bice won it back.
Now, the Republicans in the state carved out the Democratic areas and put them into other - heavily R districts - so that the 5th became a diehard R district too.
Therefore, in November, all 5 districts will go R with at least 60%, if not more.
Despite Dems usually getting 35% in the state, they will get zero of 5 seats, "thanks" to unfair re-districting.
This shows how urgent an electoral reform in the US House is nationwide. Redistricting/gerrymandering by state parties must be banned and MPs elected by proportional representation.
This would represent the voter's choice well and fairly.
Gerrymandering by partisan parties is a perversion of democracy.
You're "outing" a tryhard candidate. "Uphill battle" (Source #1) doesn't even begin to describe the Oklahoma 5th this year.
But this is what I expect from a @Schism thread. Nothing but the lowest hanging fruit.
Drunk Democratic House hopeful verbally berated girls at party, parent says
First, in addition to berating the girls, she makes a bigoted remark:
Second, she lies about even being there:
Third she deflects blame *not her fault*:
and...
Democrats will probably elect her in a landslide...she's one of them!

That's different. She's a Republican. Will Trump endorse her like he endorsed the candidate accused of abusing her estranged husband's daughter?

Cry more, that’s good districting policy. Given the totalitarian rhetoric of the Dems any solution which keeps them out of power is justifiedOklahoma is another example of how re-dictricting sucks when it's done by a majority party in a state:

It is as though you see voters as never changing their votes beyond party affiliation, which is sad.Well put. There needs to be a federal algorithm, for states to stay within bounds of, with the ideal being that 35% of the voters get 35% of the representatives. 25% acceptable, 40% acceptable, outside that, no, Federal veto.
In Oklahoma's case that would be one Strong Democratic seat, one Tossup seat, and three Strong Republican seats. In other words "one and a half" Democratic seats in the unknown future.
There's another line of thinking which I'm pursuing, which is that as many as possible seats should be tossups. However, it goes against the majority in any one state, so it needs some work.
As I assume you are aware, that would require a constitutional amendment.Well put. There needs to be a federal algorithm, for states to stay within bounds of, with the ideal being that 35% of the voters get 35% of the representatives. 25% acceptable, 40% acceptable, outside that, no, Federal veto.
Gerrymandering by any other name, is still gerrymandering. In Oklahoma's case that would be one Strong Democratic seat, one Tossup seat, and three Strong Republican seats. In other words "one and a half" Democratic seats in the unknown future.
