To my understanding it's illegal for a non-American citizen to make a political contribution to an American election.

However, there are no restrictions on unions or corporations from donating to a campaign while union employees and stockholders can be foriegn nationals. Superpacs can carry out their own independent campaigns to influence the outcome of American elections and it's anyone's guess who gives them their money. Potentially even an adversarial foriegn government like Iran or Venezuela could be buying the TV ads to influence the outcome of an American election under the current system. Has anyone else here ever considered this?

Yes, one of the consequences of Citizens United was that foreign agents can supply PACs through corporations, and anonymously funnel money into US elections. Since any kind of company can anonymously donate to a SuperPAC, which can then spend their money with impunity, foreign powers can influence American elections now.

Also, I have no idea why anyone makes a fuss about the money from unions. Unions don't have enough money to play in the same field as big private corporations. The two are not equal in this regard. Unions don't really make a difference in the grand scheme of election finance.
