It was her ticket to better-paying work, she felt, after getting kicked out of high school and toiling for eight years at factory jobs to support her children.

“This is a new path for me to get on with my life,” she said.

But Martin didn’t take any classes or pass any tests to receive her degree. She got it in July from a school where students can get a high school diploma for $465.

Keep in mind. During the Vietnam war, such things were common..in a different way.. Many men who had rich families got a diploma from certain colleges, without actually doing much.
Of course, they didn't have to join the service and have their brains blown out.

This has been around forever. Back when smoking was cool, these types of “schools” could be found advertised on the inside of matchbooks. There’d be a brief ad buried in the “Help Wanted” section of newspapers too. A few were actually legitimate. Worse than piss poor maybe, but legitimate. Most weren’t.
