I wasn't going to post about this but I couldn't let it go. This was in "The Washington Post" today. It doesn't belong in the "Breaking News" forum since it is an opinion piece. It is also behind a paywall so many people would have trouble gaining access to it. But I didn't want to read it and fail to mention it on Debate Politics because I found it so chilling. I wanted to know if other members had also read it and what they thought about it.

"A Trump Dictatorship is increasingly inevitable. We should stop pretending." by Robert Kagan

The more people who warn of the coming Trump dictatorship the more you learn his supporters are okay with that.

They would rather live in an authoritarian state with a leader they agree with that in a democracy with leaders they don’t.

How are they defining dictatorship? I can't see any process by which he remains president after 4 years. Do they mean dictatorship until the next election?

Dictators usually hold onto power for life but that’s not the definition. They sometimes pass it on to a deputy or a relative, often when they get old or sick. They are sometimes deposed by a deputy or relative who wants his turn sooner.

Trump will be over eighty by the end of his term if he wins. If he hoards outsize power, stops holding proper elections (or at least controls the count) seeks a some Supreme Court rubber stamp for a longer term or a constitutional amendments from a stacked congress, all these are benefits he could pass on to a successor. There could be a series of one-party dictators following on from Trump if the GOP refuse to relinquish power.

Granted this is all what-if, but its increasingly clear the party leans toward authoritarianism these days.

Some liberals are feigning fear of a dictatorship under the Honorable Donald John Trump.

He could not be a dictator if he tried.

The American system of government is full of safeguards that prevent that.

When President Trump asked for troops to patrol D.C., the Pentagon told him to go pound sand.

When it was feared that besieged President Nixon might use the troops to stay in power, his Secretary of Defense told all generals to ignore any orders from the President.

I have read that the Washington Post is in serious financial straits.

That's great news!

Besides, if there ever is a dictatorship (such as a president unilaterally forgiving college loans!), it will be under a "Democratic" president and Congress. Maybe in 2025.

Someone should tell Robert Kagan that it’s not nice to scare children.

A supporter of dictatorships would cheer the demise of a newspaper that employs fact checkers. Kind of a giveaway.

The first 19 paragraphs of that article are irrelevant to the topic of that writer's article. He doesn't even start talking about Trump, as President, until his 20th paragraph.

If Trump does win the election, he will immediately become the most powerful person ever to hold that office. Not only will he wield the awesome powers of the American executive — powers that, as conservatives used to complain, have grown over the decades — but he will do so with the fewest constraints of any president, fewer even than in his own first term.

Here, that writer sets up his go to style: Over the top hyperbole and being blind to reality.

Every President is subject to the Constitution and to the law. Trump has never violated the Constitution nor broken any laws during his first term and there's no reason to think he will during his second term. But Trump was certainly massively constrained...far more than any other President in our history...during his first term by the media, by lawfare, by ridiculous impeachments and, even, by corrupt backstabbers in his own administration. There is no reason to think that any of that will go away during his second term.

From this point, I just skimmed some of the rest of that article. It is all unadulterated nonsense.

Bottom line response: Trump has no desire to be a dictator, but he is America First and he'll use every legal power of his presidency to advance his America First agenda.

Somebody is worried they are about to lose a paycheck from their soon to be deposed government masters.

Trump has never violated the Constitution nor broken any laws during his first term
Lol.

- Obstructed justice in the Mueller investigation.
- Placed a quid pro quo on Congressionally-approved foreign aid.
- Scammed his supporters out of $250 million for a fake Election Defense Fund.
- Conspired to defraud the election with fake slates.
- Made false statements in furtherance of conspiracy to defraud the election.

All of those are illegal.

I might start to worry when Edward (Coup d'État: A Practical Handbook) Luttwak shows up as a Trump campaign consultant.

Did you type that with a straight face? Clearly wrong - on both counts.

But Trump was certainly massively constrained...far more than any other President in our history...during his first term by the media,
Really? He used the media to further his goals.

by lawfare,
No one is supposed to be above the law.

by ridiculous impeachments
Not ridiculous. Quite serious.

and, even, by corrupt backstabbers in his own administration.
He chose poor characters because his only real criteria is a pledge of fealty to him.

There is no reason to think that any of that will go away during his second term.
His own poor character and lack of morals will not go away, true.

Trump has no desire to be a dictator
Then why does he continually profess admiration for fascist dictators? Of course he does. He wants to be king.

but he is America First and he'll use every legal power of his presidency to advance his America First agenda.
He is not for any America I believe in. But he has and will use every legal and illegal means to stay out of prison and to line his pockets.

I don’t believe America will make the mistake of ever letting Donald near the White House again. If I am wrong it will be a disaster.

Not if you have the other areas of government filled with enablers.

And with the help of a GOP senate, Trump could replace the current JCS with his own loyalists who would do his bidding.

If Trump gets to appoint loyalists in key positions such as AG and director of FBI, he has the power of the Patriot Act to arrest anyone at any time without warrants if he were to call them terrorists or terrorist sympathizers. He can, under the Patriot Act, suspend habeas corpus, holding people incommunicado, without access to the courts or lawyers. If this caused an uproar, he could invoke the insurrection act and deploy U.S. military units onto the streets of American cities to suppress any opposition. He could arrest any judge who was bold enough to rule against him. All the while using right wing media to promote lies to justify his actions.

And if he were to do this, at least 20 million Americans would cheer him on.

Chilling? This ^^^ is a Conspiracy Theory. Lets keep things in perspective.

How could TrumpJesus ever violate the Constitution?

Just because he tried to overthrow the US government, that doesn't mean he tried to violate the Constitution.

TrumpJesus cannot misbehave. He's perfect!

Trump will use the too-broad Insurrection Act if elected. He will use the PATRIOT Act if elected.

He has a SCOTUS that will rubber stamp detentions, camps and expulsions.

Joe’s crappy poll numbers bring out the leftist propaganda pusher’s desperate last ditch efforts.
And the commie lemmings just lap it up.
Its sad, really.
